magnet cars...not my thing

Postby btaylor » Tue Apr 01, 2014 8:17 am

Came to a conclusion this weekend, after running several various manufacturers new cars, i dont think,in fact im pretty sure,I dont like magnet cars. I also found out that my 16x6 ft oval,is more fun than i can stand! I had built the track so it could be converted to a road course, and and it is great, but four evenly matched cars on that oval is side splitting laughter fun! However, the older cars, and artin stockers seem to be the most fun, what with the rears hanging out thru the r4 sweeping turns and then trying to pass on the straights without a big difference in the power of the cars,is just to much fun. I also like the slower, yet fast enough speeds of the strommies and Artin cars they seem to be a tad more realistic to drive, maybe thats just me? Now i cant wait to build the Saturday night specials based on the same power and traction qualities (or lack thereof) as the artin cars, might even use the extra chassis's i have to build them.
So,is this just the ravings of an old fool,or does anyone else share this enjoyment of less than state of the art cars?
At this point it looks like the oval will become permanent, and that would allow for some scenery and such!

Sure, a lot of us old guys are like this :)

After awhile you figure out what speeds and characteristics you enjoy the most. I like a magnet car once in awhile, and sometimes enjoy a fast mover. But good old drifting our oval cars at closer to scale speeds is as about as good as it gets.

Funny YOU (Harry) should agree with me,as your review of the "american thunder' race set,(found on a link thru e-bay) is what got me back into slot racing after 20+ yeras! Cant thank you enough for that,as it has brought my family a common interest that we can all have fun with.and brought me back a very missed enjoyment of building slots as well
would love to have access to all the old artin reviews, but dont know how to find them?

I guess i just need to figure out how to de-tune some of the new rides, and they will be great. i really like the detail they have, plus if folks didnt buy the new cars ,the industry would suffer, and we all would feel that to some degree. last night i pulled the magnet from my carrera cobra, and did a lot better, still has to much traction tho,an easy fix i think.

Thanks Bibbster! That will be a big help! Is there anything about artin cars (other than extinction) that keeps people from using the chassis or parts?

I build all my cars with no magnet, but I do like to run both magnet and non mag, I have a big track so magnets are fun 2 :music-rockout:

To me one of the very best parts of this hobby is the diversity of ways to enjoy both building and racing. Since I started to race mostly plastic based cars I have run with three different clubs. One that races on a fairly large Artin Plastic four lane track with different types of turns, elevation changes and they use magnets with different down force readings for different classes. Most of the racing is done with Scalextric, Pioneer and Slot it cars and the racing is very close and good. I once asked the track owner if he had thought of non magnet racing and he stated that they had done that but he thought it was simpler and cheaper with the magnets as it took tire magic out of the equation and people did not need a tire truing machine.

Club number two races on a series of routed road race tracks and of course the racing is non mag. The people who run in this club are more technically involved in tire choice and spend a lot of time with that aspect of the racing (My tire razor should be in the mail). This club runs four classes per meet. Two of these classes are fairly restrictive Trans Am with tire and motor change to the Slot it orange end bell and a mostly stock Slot it group C class basically stock with a spec tire. They also have two classes that are much less restrictive and I must say everybody has a blast.

Club number three runs on a wooden eight lane oval of about 45 to 50', they run three classes, A stock SCX NASCAR class with the 42-B motor and silicone tires, a womp class using the H&R 26K motor and a 1/24 H&R hard body NASCAR using the stock H&R NASCAR chassis and the same H&R 26K motor. The really neat part of this club is the varied voltage from lane to lane making for equal times on all eight lanes.

Three fairly different approaches to Slot Car racing with a lot of differences and one BIG thing in common, all three clubs are competitive but not at the expense of having a great time.

One of the very best things about the slotting hobby is that there are so many ways you can enjoy it. Magnets. Sans magnet. Fast. Slow. Road. Oval. Rally. Raid. But the most important thing of all is the smile it brings to your face.

When you go magent-less in your factory store-bought cars, you end up with a TON of super strong fridge magnets. Be warned though, half the time I end up scratching the fridge pushing the magnets to the edge where I can actually lift them off the door!
