artin axle size?

Postby btaylor » Mon Apr 07, 2014 6:31 am

I am wanting to get the steel wheels for some upcoming artin chassis projects, anyone know what size the axle's are?.or is there an alternative to the steel wheels? just wanting to get a different look other than the stock wheels. something more fitting for old bombers and specials.thanks

The Artin axle that I measured was 0.099 inch, which is a little too big to fit a standard aftermarket wheel, those are 3/32nds or 0.094 inch. Aftermarket wheels are usually aluminum or sometimes magnesium. You might have to buy aftermarket axles, bearings and gears that match, but it would be cheaper to get a 0.099 inch reamer. That would be a number 39.

They're the same size as NINCO - 2.48 / 2.49 mm (officially 2.5mm). You can use NINCO hardware - OR - replace the bearings with 3/32" i.d. ones and use goodies from so many more other manufacturers.

Bob, What do you mean by "steel wheels?. Do you mean the aluminum wheels that look like classic steelies that SCC sells? Like others have said, I suggest that you change out the entire axle set, axle/gear/bushings/wheels. Slot.it sells those as complete sets. I like to buy the ones with the 15X8 plastic wheels if I plan to use other wheels anyway. I save a couple of bucks that way and have a spare set of plastic 15X8's to run on the front of some future project.

like Mike said, Slot.it sells 15X8 plastic wheels, I`ve had great results redrilling those wheels ( with a lathe) to fit the Artin axle. Then your open to many inserts that fit slot.it or SCC wheels.

Ya Mark is right, those Slot.it 15/8 plastic insert wheels are plenty good enough for modest Artin power. I believe M/T Racing Resins may even carry the right sized inserts to use in them do you not?

Yes I do still have a few steel wheel inserts left, but don`t show them on my page any longer, nor do I cast them currantly.

The plastic wheels would be fine for my use,and inserts would be great as well. would cost quite a bit to convert all the artin bombers to aluminum rims just to get a better look! do the 15x8 plastic wheels have removable inserts? or do they need machined?

You remove them. The MT inserts drop in, or need a little hand sanding with fine grit along the edges. No machining.

When you said "steel wheels" in you original post, I assumed you meant aftermarket aluminum. Slot.it plastic insert wheels are meant to take any 15X8 Slot.it insert. Slot.it pretty much is the standard that most others use so most any 15X8 inserts will work in them. M/T as far as I know, is the only circle track type insert source that I can think of. A quick look at Mark's M/T site, I found no steelie type wheel inserts but he did have 70's stocker slotted steel wheels and several varieties of wide 5 inserts. You can also turn down model kit wheels if you have them. I do mine in a drill press. A simple drill motor would suffice as well. Stock Artin stocker wheels look good on bomber type cars. Another source for classic steelies are Carrera classic Nascar's have wheels. Carrera do sell wheel/ bushing/ axle / gear sets as spare parts too at considerable less cost than aftermarket aluminum wheels

So,if i have this right, any of the plastic 15x8 wheels from slot.it will have removable inserts? then i can use either resins or home made to fit type. i will have to bore the axle hole to 2.5 mm to use the artin axles?
i looked at the slot it wheels on prof.motors sight,as i could not find a way to buy direct on the slot it site, unless i was at the wrong site.....very possible.

All Slot.it wheels are insert type wheels. Slot.it makes nothing else.

I used to play with Artin cars a lot but it's been awhile so I am unsure of the exact axle dimension of Artin axles. I do recall the listing for NInco axles to be 2.48 mm. My best recollection is that the Artin wheels fit a little loose on Ninco axles. I can't tell you exactly which size bit to use but this is what I would do. To get the correct size, I would start by simply pressing the shank of a drill somewhere around 2.48mm into an Artin wheel If the fit is snug enough to securely hold the wheel, I would use that. Too loose, go up a size. Too tight, go down a size. My local Coast Hardware store carries unpackaged bits in a indexed display. It is easy to try different bits in the store before I buy.

Thanks for the link Harry! I hate to seem so ignorant about some of these topics, but since i was in slots the last time, all we had were threaded aluminum wheels with rubber or foam tires. none of the really cool stuff thats out there today! its taking a little time to take in all this new info, and without all of this groups help.it would be quite frustrating,or at least expensive buying the wrong things just to learn what DONT fit.
its a long way from mail ordering from autoworld!
Thanks
Bob

No problem, that is what a good forum is for.

AH, good old AW catalogs. Rates right up there with the old Sears Wish Book.
