Solo racing car vs car

Postby Dangermouse » Mon Apr 21, 2014 7:21 am

I was driving a a Fly 250LM tonight after adding some new tyres and fixing the front wheels.

Now someone is probably already doing this and I may have missed a thread on it.

As I was doing some laps I had this idea. I spend a lot of time running cars by myself so I thought instead of laps against the clock why not set up races - where I set up a single lane and a set number of laps but instead of drivers I add cars into the RM. Instead of a new driver each time it would be a new car. I could race like cars against like or have a 50s GP race or classic sports cars and then see which car actually comes out in front after a set number of laps.

I would imagine this would be like how a proxy race must be run. I thought it would be a fun way to add some variety to my usual time races or just doing some laps.

Anyone already doing this? Any suggestions or tips.

cheers
David

I did that when I had a track here at home. Enter in a few cars, set the time for 3 minutes, and race them. Usually the same car would win, at least until I tuned the slower ones to run better. Over time, I found myself becoming a better driver :auto-driving: and also learning how to tune cars better. :D

Probably a better idea than what i do on the oval ,flyin Solo.
I set up a car in the center lane, plug in one of my old aurora steering wheel controllers set at a fast enough pace, and then try to catch the other car.
ita amazing how a constant ,yet slower speed can actually be faster?

I do a lot of my slot car driving alone and I do something similar. I will select several cars in the same class by the same manufacturer and do a ten lap time trial for each, recording fastest lap and overall time to complete. I have a spreadsheet program I got from Lap Timer 2000 where I store data about all of my slot cars including fastest lap for up to three tracks and the date of the time trial. When preparing for a race, such as our upcoming 2hr. enduro using scaley modern GT cars, I tune three or four of my fastest cars in that class and then run time trials. I pay more attention to which car has the best overall time for twenty laps than which car I was able to squeeze the fastest individual lap from. A lot of the time it is the same car, but not always. I'd rather run a car that is easier to run reasonably fast than one that can be pushed harder for one or two laps but is inconsistent and deslots occasionally.

I have noticed that factors like temperature and humidity also have a significant impact on lap times which varies from car to car.

Yes sir, do this myself. It is a fun way to tune both your models and yourself :)

I keep one of my controllers in a cradle that has an adjustable hook to hold the trigger at a set spot, and I use a smooth car on that lane to run against. I can practice on 3 lanes while that one runs a bird dog for me to chase.

One of these days I'll have to set up a timing arrangement, but I'm in no hurry. Of course, if I'm going to do some hosting for proxies, I'll have to get serious about doing that sooner than later.

Like the others have said, that's how I run a proxy event. My lap timing consist of a very simple PC mouse based timing system called "PC Slot Mouse"

Great idea David, I like the race car by class structure particularly.
Cheers for the tip on that.

Now I know it probably feels a bit like this

but I think it will be fun - we have a public holiday on Friday so I might have to schedule a race meet :)

I do it too... http://homeracingworld.us/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=573

Helps with my driving...not that it matters when Jeremy is in the next lane over...

SCC has a good program you can download also for recording data. http://www.slotcarcorner.com/Software-c20/ I have used it some with my old track but am going to start using it religiously when the new track is ready.
