Scorpius Wireless Controller
Posted: Tue May 06, 2014 12:15 amLast fall I made the investment of buying the Scorpius wireless controller to be used when I race 1/32 cars. It was originally designed to be used with digital setup tracks but the inventor added a Wireless Analog Module (WAM) so it can be used on analog tracks. I initially bought just the controller and the WAM and have enjoyed using it very much. It gives me the freedom of not having to move to each driver's station during a race and it is also helpful when I am troubleshooting a section of track. During our recent enduro race I was able to drive all of my assigned lanes from the same position. The space gets a little crowded when there are 8 drivers and a couple of spectators present and even worse when three or more of the drivers are mobility challenged.
The controller is capable of being programmed with multiple power curves to suit different cars. Programming the controller by itself is a challenging task and I never even tried so I have been using the default settings. Another component is called the "dongle" which looks like a memory stick but is actually a wireless transmitter which allows the owner to program custom power curves on a PC computer and then send the information to the controller. I ordered the dongle a couple of weeks ago and it arrived late last week. I didn't have time before Saturday's race to experiment with the programming but I have now reprogrammed all 10 of the sensitivity settings and wow what an improvement in control over some of my faster cars. Scorpius has reduced their prices a bit since I bought the controller and WAM so now I think you can get all three components for just over $200. I swore a while back that I would never pay more than $100 for a controller but I am now glad that I reconsidered that decision.
Professor Motor carries Scorpius products but they haven't had the WAM for quite a while. It can be ordered from Scorpius in Australia and it takes a couple of weeks for it to be delivered.
