Old Computer CD Drives

Older CD drives used the slim can FF 050 11170 motors to turn the mechanisms, but newer ones don't. We use these in our Formula Ford class. They turn about 16K at 12 volts and work nicely in light cars. I just tore apart 7 computers for scrap and parts and got 4 such motors. You can buy them new at

I have 5 old PCs around and at least 3 are pre 2001......I was going to take them to electronic disposal after I pulled the hard drives; looks like I'll have to cannibalize the CDs also!

Thanx now you tell us! The Formula Ford class sounds interesting I'v seen mention of it before somewhere.
