I wonder what drove them to make this, and what Carrera thinks about it.

Might be due to the popularity of the series across the pond and the fact Carrera has released enough of them to start a large series. This is just the first series. Never know, you might see this happening for a number of other brand models.
I am just guessing.
Not sure how Carrera feels. I am sure we will hear more as time goes on.

Personally... I think it's a good sign when aftermarket parts are available for an existing product by another company.
A bit of a story, bear with me. I love my Mini Cooper. I was talking with someone at one of the magazines that specializes in MINIs. He said that he felt it was huge for the growth of MINI as a brand to have a number of products by aftermarket companies to support the customization by MINI enthusiasts. They still have to buy a MINI in the first place from MINI... they now have even more options to customize if they want to than they did before. Most people who buy a Cooper won't do anything to it, why? Because you can enjoy it as it is... OR... you can do the full sheebang and go nuts with Carbonfibre parts and sticker kits, etc...
Does Slot It making a chassis for Carrera's DTMs feel like a bit of a surprise? Yes...
Does this mean that hobbyists who might not have considered a Carrera car in the first place now have the extra bit of incentive to purchase a Carrera car they might not have considered before? Yes...
Are opinions within Carrera going to differ on this... Yes...
In the end to use this chassis you STILL NEED TO BUY A CARRERA DTM.... so... who wants a DTM? I have some in stock! :)

Another way to look at it... how do you turn a $45.00 Carrera car into a $100.00 Carrera car? Add this chassis :)

I think it has to motivated by the popularity of the DTM series. Otherwise, just think of all the RTR car chassis that you would replace before one as good as Carrera. Ninco and Pinkcar spring to mind... Just thinking about an affordable precision chassis with a mild motor under some of my favorite bodies.

This all reminds me of a conversation I had with Bob Rule (former owner of Champion of Georgia and Bolink RC cars) the topic was that sometimes technology kills. One thing that I have found in this hobby of 1/32 plastic based slot car racing is that there are many cars and companies out there that supply cars that are great fun to race when raced against others of similar capabilities. I am on record as being a Racer, Slot It and NSR kind of guy, however, Scaley and other companies also make very nice cars. Every car can not be a two piece chassis rocket but do they really need to be?
Some of my best fun have come when racing 50s type front engine F-1s against other 50s type F-1s. Where they rockets, no but on the 10 volts they were every bit as much fun to drive as an NSR with Ultra Grip Rubber tires.

Different needs in different places. Dave K. is right though that Carrera isn't hurt as they still have to get the car from them. I do the same to Scalextric for my bodies - you still need to get a chassis or complete car from them.

I agree with Dave and Dave, its just a tune up part for those that desire it, you still need the car.
DTM is growing in popularity all the time, so I don't see a loser here.
Just my opinion

I think it will be very interesting to see a head to head comparison with the stock Carrera and new Slot.it chassis. If the Slot.it chassis can make the car handle better, be more predictable, and go faster, it will be a product that will be quite successful. If there is no improvement in performance then obviously the new chassis will be a bust.

These are really good looking cars and they go fine for most people's needs.
I would say there is a group of racers who are used to racing slot.it pod cars, the performance and the tuning they get from these. By offering this chassis these racers can have a whole new class which has got to keep the folks interested and vary the racing. There are folks would love slot.it to make lots classes of cars they don't and I think we all know that they can't at this stage for a number of reasons.
I have raced Plafit metal chassis cars - folks who race them buy RTR comes remove the chassis and mount the plafit - same thing and while you might say why not race them as they come - I think it is a case of the level of performance is a step up.
