Well I wasn't going to sir. Mine run just fine after tuning...at least for my taste.

But it sounds like we have someone else already doing it, so I look forward to the report.

We are in violent agreement on the tuned Carrera DTM cars. I think they run just fine. I know the one I bought was a digital model as Dave Kennedy said they were not going to bring them to the US, except as digital. I see that they are available in analog this year, same models, just analog.

But I rewired my digital unit so the motor is directly connected to the braids and the only thing the digital unit does is provide lights. They look pretty cool with lights in them.

Once tuned though, the experience of racing them is much like the Carrera Historic NASCAR models. Big, bulky, beastly and a handful to drive. They can turn decent laps, but once they reach the edge of performance it's like having a turtle - they just turn on their backs and rock around. :laughing-rolling:

I think making them run like Sideways Group 5 cars would only be detrimental to the enjoyment of a good $32 slot car!

I received my chassis from Shapeways in the mail yesterday. Quick shipping via USPS left New York on Friday arrived in Sacramento Monday and only $4.99. I purchased the BMW and Audi chassis with the Scalextric digital door.

Packaging was excellent, I chose the black strong finish. The look sootie when I removed the from the bags they were in but it's just the flat finish. I test fitted the BMW and it us right on. The screw holes needed a little clean out. (I don't have a Carrera Audi yet). I will be putting a Slot It sidewinder set up in it with the yellow can motor in it. More to follow and pictures.

OK, here are the Photos. I ran the car tonight on wood track at Sidewinder Raceway. In Stock configuration, with some minor set up work. Tires trued, engine broken in and lubed. Stock Carrera ran a 9.55. Not fast for most of our classes. Then I switch out the chassis to the Slot it/Shapeways chassis with the yellow can Slot it motor. I borrowed the motor, pod, wheels and tires from my Slot it Audi R18. with this set up I was able to run a 7.70.

Thank you very much for the photos and the results from running the car.

I for one think an almost 2 second decrease in lap time is very significant. We're talking about a 20% reduction in lap times.

Now, I would imagine that the car with the Slot.It chassis is heavier than the car with the Carrera chassis in it. I know that the Flat-6 motor is heavier than the FC130 motor, so I have to assume the BMW with the Flat-6 motor is as well.

I had performed some pseudo semi-scientific testing on a pair of McLaren F1 GTRs. One with the older inline motor pod and FC130 motor and the newer anglewinder with the Flat-6 motor. The car with the anglewinder Flat-6 was 8 grams heavier. I do believe mostly due to the weight of the longer motor with all that metal in there.

Bottom line is I'm impressed.

Think of it this way: for an additional 50 bucks (chassis, motor, wheels, gears, guide), you can now take your Carrera DTM car and turn it into a Sideways DTM car. For some, that's well worth the price of admission. Not something I need, personally, but a very good option for some folks -- especially if they already have most of the parts lying around.
