The track is gray rubber like plastic that requires some sort of adapter to mate with black scx track.why the differing track types?Carrera does no such thing and I wonder if I made a mistake by going with the SCX set!

The new scx track. it's a little wider than the black one. It is better if you race F1 or open wheel cars.
I have used the adaptation track and there's no problem, it works fine!
Anyway you can't use the old barriers and borders on the black track or vice versa.

Well, I can't say it would have been my first choice. Hope you got a really good deal.
And I would not advise the older, black track. The slot is very shallow and most all the guides you have, especially your 1/24 and vintage guides will rub the bottom and snag on every joint. I doubt you want to start grinding all your guides.
I would start searching for sources of the newer track and stick with it, or start shopping for a new system.

Luckily i got a good deal but I don't think it is cool to not tell the consumer that the grey track is not compatible with the black track without the adapter despite the fact that they both share the SCX designation .seems a bit dishonest. The cars are very nice however!
