My thoughts on he review of the LMM 1973 Porsche Carrera RSR

Postby Modlerbob » Sat Dec 20, 2014 6:03 pm

I read the review of the LMM Porsche and I agree with the author that it is a fine looking model in spite of the minor flaws he found in it's assembly. But I think he was overly forgiving with his commentary. At least LMM did send him the missing marker light from the right front and I am sure he can repair the windscreen and frame problem as I could. But even at the discounted price from Powerslots I think he should have sent it back. How else will a maker of "collector quality" models know they have a problem with their assembly crew? At $50-$80 I can tolerate a loose or missing part or one that is not placed securely but when I dole out over $100 on a model I expect it to be complete and right.

Racer level or better detailing for half the price. I love all my LMM's and hope to obtain many more......

I bought one a few years ago and never looked back at that name, no matter what they offer. I should sell it, I never run it.

Wow that's cool, a review of a review! This is really good, please keep comments coming.

I am so smitten with my new Porsche RSR and realized that what ever the quality, flaws or shining examples of scale detailing that the LMM crew built, this is a historical piece of slot car modeling of a very rare Porsche that I actually worked on and absolutely had to be in my stable. And a very limited edition that, if returned, might have arrived back in a different condition. Yes I agree that all the bits should be sorted on delivery and at the same time I don't mind sorting it out. Emotion and lust ruled over logic. All the real Porsches I've owned there wasn't a one that needed fritzing around with. I could never own a real ex-werks factory race Porsche, so this is as good as it gets for me. I'm happy, LMM made good with the replacement front lens and now I can fritz with my race car.

While shooting the photos, I realized the small windscreen ungluing and thought the way to continue on was to create the best review I could with photographic proof of how it arrived delivered. I knew going into this that I was short on actual slot car knowledge, test running it and reviewing the slot parts of it. So I thought, why not put an Art Direction and historical review twist to this and include all the data of the real R6 chassis too.

You're right, how else will LMM know what the condition of their models are when they eventually end up in the owners hands? I emailed the review and forum posting to LMM directly. I don't expect them to take it back or fix it. Hopefully they can use this to start implementing new methods and glues for the windscreen. I use special canopy glue for scale sailplanes and plan to help LMM out with some suggestive comments. I like to be helpful and will try to provide additional reviews of more Porsches that join my stable from LMM.

Cheers, Thompson

Contacted Scalextric about the incorrect front tires for the recent Cougar. No reply.

I had one LMM and had issues years ago. I emailed them and although the translation was rough, a chassis was still sent to me. I did not ask for it, just sent photos to them so they were aware.

We expect a product to be of certain quality upon purchase. Most times our companies do it easily, sometimes not. Just like anything else. The difference for me is how they react when a mistake is made. Should it have been without flaws? I suppose. Yet they cared enough about the customer and made a strong attempt to rectify the issue.

Well done LMM.

I didn't deny that it is a very nice looking car and since there was no real review on how it runs I assume it is much like my two LMM cars, a bit iffy. My concern was that it left the factory with some glaring construction issues. If you aren't paying the extra $50-$60 for a quality build, what are you paying it for? Over the years I have built all kinds of models for customers who paid good money for my work and I would never let one go with construction errors like that car had.

One-offs are not in the same league as a company the hand makes almost all
the parts with production numbers in the hundreds.

Ah yes Bob but was the quality and finish on your $500 dollar car 10 times better than say a $50 Scaly? I think you may have answered your own question. You were able to charge $500 because it was a limited edition and someone REALLY wanted it. You charge what the market can bare. You might well find that you would struggle to shift 5000 units of that $500 car as the market just isnt there. The good thing is that generally there is a price point (and quality point) in this hobby for just about everyone.

Point being you can compare you work to LMM AFTER you create a model
from scratch producing 95% or more of the parts and assembling 100 or
so examples. Now do something like four or five issues a year....

No, I don't think you'd be in the same league. Clear enough?

I think the review gave enough info to anyone interested in obtaining one. OK it's hand built and the review pointed out issues that the model had. These issues they were addressed by the producer. I understand at the price it's reasonable to expect no such issues. But that info is the important part of the review so an informed purchase can be made.

Personally, I'm more aggravated that the review spent no time disassembling the car in question or running the car in question to give us information on its function.

I enjoyed the historical aside regarding the prototype, but I'm not reading to find out the history of the model. I'm reading to find out what issues will keep my slot car from performing properly.
