My first Scratch Built Chassis

Postby Tigeracer » Sun Jan 06, 2013 12:45 pm

Hi All,
I just completed my first scratch built chassis! It's made from 20mm styrene sheet, all SCX running parts. The body is a transam6870 resin Lotus Elite. Body work, paint and decals to come. My first attempt was not successful, but the second did prove to work. She runs well but there is some minor adjusting to be done. I have even greater respect for all you that have built your own, after going through the process... thanks to all the scratch builders for the inspiration!

Nice work, Greg, i like the chassis design :)
Now only to lower the front a little :) - only want to bug you a little (more :p )
20mm styrene - or 2mm ;)
how is the motor mounted? if the car is no-magnet - i use hotglue to hold the motors.

Oops, 2.0mm styrene. The decimal is important after all...
Yeah Peter, I' m having a little issue with the front end.
I don't mind the constructive criticsm, that's why I posted it. :D
I always appreciate your comments!
When I drilled the axle holes, the front was a bit off compared to the rear.
It looked good until I put the body on it then put it on the track.
I don't have much room to work with, so I'll see what I can do.
I'm still learning where to place things in relation to others. Upon comparing it to SCX cars, the rear axle should have been a little lower.
Still, it's way better than the first one. It runs nice, except it can de-slot in tight corners...probably due to the high front end.
It does have a magnet.
I'll update the motor mount pic. I forgot to photograph it.
Thanks & Yes Leadfinger, only 2 screws. Actually, the mounting is so tight, I probably could get away without the screws  ...it fits snug against the motor.

Hi Greg,
nice motor mount!

the most important part for the rear axle - it has to be on the exactly same height as the motor axle.
for the desloting in tight corners - did you seal the front tires? If not, the tires grip and try to turn over the car.

Tigeracer that is great first chassie.
If you Don't want to raise the front axle up a bit try and get carrera mini type wheels that should give you the drop in the front that you may need.
Only draw back is the size wouldn't look right with the wheel opening.

Do you have to have the triangle shape for your front axle mount if not just make a rectangle pieces to replace the current mount and add in the xtra height to get the axle in the desired spot for your car.

Anywho it is a darn good build IMHO.

Thank you for sharing.

Nicely done Greg, doesn't look like you have a whole lot of room room to work with either. Just out of curiosity what kind of time is involved in doing something like this?

Nice Job

Hey: Peter, the motor might a tiny bit higher than then axle. I guess that would make the center of gravity too high. The car de-slots quite easily at times. Just glides off. Thanks for the tips!
Racer, I might just pop off the front axle mounts. They were only triangles because that is how I started to trim them down and I liked the way it looked :D
Dodge farmer, thanks! Nice build on your chassis! As for time in the project...? I can only guess because I work on and off. Sometimes at longer stretches. Maybe a few hours??? That includes standing and staring, thinking, look at something else  ... I kind of make it up as I go.
BTW, there is no time in my slot cave, anyway. I mean that figuratively and literally :!:
Thanks for sharing your tips with me!!
I'll keep you all updated.
