minimum front width inside the body is for sure an issue! will check the minimum possible width of the actual construction. it´s only pivoting, no additional front/aft movement.
front and rear movement, too??? or only left/right tilting?
Marc´s mounting post can provide some nice movement for sure.
body weight is not the issue, i think, available springs are for sure the thing thats missing, due to size. maybe some springs from an H0 car from those strange pickup shoes?

If you look down on a model car wheel that is being steered, the wheel moves through an arc which, in effect, moves the wheel forwards and backwards, This does not notice in an open wheeler, but can be limiting in a small touring/sedan car.

It's the offset from the pivot to the rim that is creating this. I tried to keep this as short as possible, but a liile is necessary. On real cars this is way less than on modell cars.

Also when you add steering the wheels and wheel carriers need to sit a little further inboard so they don't rub! Especially if there is going to be some body roll introduced into the equasion!
