Do you like this tire?

Here´s a picture of a new tire i´ve got recently:



it´s one of those new Ranch-Design Low Profile Tires.
It fits great over this nice WDF15108 15" rim! I glued this tire to the rim (as can be seen from the glue spread across the outside tire wall) and gave it a light sanding, only to get it true. Fits nice, runs great and LOOKS absolutely awesome to me.
Glad i did not keep bugging Steve to get those done ;)

I have been running a set and I certainly like the way they look, but you know I kinda like the way my oldregular Ranch wheels/Tire combe works better. I really can't put my finger on it, but the higher profile donuts just seem softer and grippier!?

@Roland, if there is a gap it is due to my tire glueing abilities :/

@Mas - i like the look way better, i could find a real difference between grip or soft/hardness. BUT i don´t have to send so much material off the tire like on the old ones ;)
As the tires are sized perfect in diameter (i did some scale calculations as well as some comparisions to 1:1 tire size), i only have to get them round and they are RTR.
If look at Tsooko´s tires from his McLaren - sponge tires with PU coating - maybe a soft tire would be better for fast racing? I´m not really sure about this. The tires are fast enough as they are. There is a guy in france who makes really soft tires for DSlots they have more grip, too. Now the question is - does more grip come from softer tires or only from the compound used? Or again a combo of both?

The Low Profile tires are made to cover the outer wheel flange - much like a 1:1 tire. The inner wheel flange can be seen when looking along the inner sidewall.

The plan is to re-make the tire patterns for the standard R-D tires (normal profile) to also wrap over the outer wheel flange plus have a better sidewall radius.

The type of compound used and the durometer of the compound will effect the grip.

Peter/Lib, I am not sure where I got the Low Profile tires I have? I thought I got them from Ranch, but it's been a while back and they came with some wheels (I think? & also I think the wheels had the same shape as the SCX wheels??? Because the tires were interchangeable, BUT I could be confused on this because I got them a couple years ago and only just started running them???)

I really tought I would prefer a wheel profile like those of the SCX & Carrera (& 99% of the 1/32 cars out there) but after running some of the low profile replacement tires I am not so sure.??? As I said I prefer the "look" and those wheels are definately easier to fit inserts in, BUT most of the cars I like and want to build are older Vintage cars which have a much higher profile tire anyways. I think that even if the Shore on the taller tires is the same it has more grip then the low profile (at least in 1/43 scale cars) Or seems to. The main distraction for me on the older Ranch wheels is there seems to be only a few sizes of tire and when I have ordered the smallest size wheel, the tires seem a little loose and as Lib mentions the sidewall profiles are kind of non-existant and not very convicing visually. The other advantage of the wheel with the center ridge is being able to get a realisitic look even in the smaller scale cars & I do like that!

Also Peter, yes the Low profile tires require less sanding, BUT on the flip side you can't sand them too much or there's nothing left!, Conversely, I have been able to get a slightly too large wheel/tire combo to fit on the old Ranch wheels, by simply sanding the tire a bunch.

What's the ultimate solution? Heck I have no idea! ;-)
