Could you build a collett to hold it?

Roland, I mould the front half of the wheel in silicone, cast a copy in resin, then just file or sand the resin by hand until it fits.

How about casting just the out side of the wheel with a simple one part mold. Then epoxy a stub of 5/16 dia. Evergreen plastic tubing or something simular on the back side of the wheel casting you just made. This will give you something to chuck in a drill or a lathe to turn down the wheel for an insert. Then remove the epoxyed stub with a cut off disk from your dremel.

So you want to turn it on a lathe, but you don't want to make a 2 part mold.
Here's a thought
Make your 1 part molds very carefully, so that your resin pieces are as close as possible to exact halves.
Measure diameter of the cast tire/wheel
On a lathe, turn some soft plastic rod (ABS or styrene, for example) to the diameter of the wheel/tire combo.
Carefully glue the resin wheel/tire casting onto the plastic rod.
On the lathe, very carefully and slowly remove material from your wheel/tire combo until you reach the desired diameter.
Remove resulting insert with parting tool, or pop it off with a razor blade.
Re-face the plastic rod and repeat.

Might work, might not.

You could use clay make the impression of the part of the wheel you want to use then take some fiberglass resin and pore it in to the clay mold.
After the fiberglass has solidified you can trim the casting down to the size you will need with files.
You end up with a insert that you can cast in your choice of modeling resin over and over as many times as needed.

I know this is not the quickest way to do what you want but this way has always worked the best for me.

OR you could find the appropriate size rod to cuck it then glue your wheel and cut your casting down to the size needed then make a mold of the insert and cast the insert as many times as needed for your project or other cars that you think that the insert looks good in.

These are the only ways I know of to accomplish what you want.

and Roland, yes, you´re way above the standards again. just file them down! As you want to race your cars and you will not be able to see the difference between a filed down insert or a turned down insert ;)

I have never done anything like this before but :idea: what it you machined a piece of tubing that is a snug fit over the wheel, then cast a deep mould of one side of the wheel. Then you end up with a solid piece of resin bar with the wheel pattern in one end. Then you can machine and part off to your hearts content.
