RESIN CASTING

Postby transam6870 » Wed Oct 09, 2013 8:57 pm

hey guys
I had an awesome conversation with a gentleman that I have a great respect for and after sharing his knowledge and information with me that respect is even greater. bringing me to a decision I have been on the fence about for a great deal of time. becoming a full blown resin caster. as many of you know I have been casting my own bodies for a long time as well as my own rims and tires and have a large number of molds but they have been for the most part for myself because of a lack of slotcar choices in our scale. I already had a huge collection of 1/43 diecasts, and if I didn't have it or couldn't find it God gave me the ability to make it(I am no pro but they work for me) so it made it easy to cast what I wanted and provide bodies to those that wanted them, but with a warning, they are slush cast and have pinholes and no clear glass. THATS WHY I HAVE NOT DONE THIS. well as of late you've seen my builds with windows, hell even the HO guys have windows, why cant we, right!? I have always wanted to do this and not at the same time, fear of failure I guess you could say. 1/43 needs more choices and scale correct choices at that. so I guess what I am wondering is the market and or interest there enough to justify the expense of the equipment( some of which I have and didn't know it), the time and a website for you guys to use. I have 132 molds at last count and in no way plan to jump in with all of them, that's insane, a lot of them need rework and a plug made. a few here and then a few there depending on how well they are received. some already have plugs and open windows, I have not made mention of those cars, sorry about that. my plan is to offer the best quality and consistent casting I can and with a vac formed window unit and possibly a driver tray as you would find on some other resin kits on the bay that you have to give your left testicle for, but for a reasonable price. somewhere in the $10 - 20 range depending on the car. is there enough of a market? I love this hobby and I love this scale and I want to share it. your thoughts PLEASE.

Yes! Your resins are great! I'm always checking out your work. Your passion for the hobby shows and making some of your resins to sell would be awesome. I agree windows are a big plus IMO. I have to get enough guts to paint them however. After looking at so many custom jobs in this scale and other scales, it gives me both incentive and anxiousness.

Mick I`ve been telling you that your work is remarkable, you have a special talent for this scale that I haven`t seen since I`ve been messing with 1/43,yes windows would be a plus also, but if you`re going to do it,do it now, while the 1/43 is still in the growing phase, then you`ll grow with it! GO GIT EM "Mr RESINATOR" yeah to what Bibbster said on the SPOKE RIMS!

BTW I`m still looking for that 56 chevy 2 dr sedan!  :banana-gotpics:

I understand you concerns Mickey, but a resin with glass is necessary in the kit and it will not be that expensive. $10-$12 would be great.
As to what bodies will sell depends on the market. Sometimes you will do one you think will sell great, and it doesn't. You just gotta keep your ear to forums and take a shoot!
I do that with my business daily. You just have a close out on product that doesn't sell.

Love the idea of more choice. Clear windows will make a big difference saleability-wise. Do you have a compressor? Curing casts in a Harbor Freight pressure pot eliminated more bubbles. It would mean 2 piece body molds a bit more time up front, , but this would really increase your productivity, because you pour them up, close them up, and stick them in the pot instead of spending the time to slush multiple layers in the mold.

As far as glazing goes, lots of DIY Vac-Form videos on YouTube, and you would only need a little one. I haven't found a source of PETG between the overpriced K&S sheets at the hobby store, and large orders, but I don't have very good plastic vendors locally.

You can do it! Hope the unsolicited advice was not too abviou or annoying ;)

Thank you for your input gentlemen.
Datto Not at all that's why I asked for opinions. All of the required equipment has been ordered. I have started building my new vac table. I look at it this way. If nothing else my cars are going to look awesome. If I can provide what this scale needs that's great. If they don't sell so well that's fine too. That's the chance you take a guess. I've never tried to make money doing this. Just cover what I had in it. I do this for the love of cars not money. I know everyone has different taste some cars will do better than others. I will start this just like I did in the beginning, for myself and if I can provide some for you guys that will be great. And besides I have grown tired of waiting on slush cast and then having to fill pin holes.

Mickey,

Sounds great. All of the castings I've gotten from you, I've had no complaints (although some took a tad bit more to prep than others). I've been very happy with every one of them and they have quickly become some of my favorites. All of your work has been outstanding and wish you the best of luck taking the next step with your talent.

(PS more American muscle and a Porsche slant nose)

This gets my attention a lot, can these resin bodies be mounted to Carrera, SCX 143 chassis? I have set up an Artin 132 track and hve been running a few 143 Carrera nascars on it and they are quite fun and there is plenty of room for some very good racing. I have been thinking of trying more of the 143 scale cars IF they are more scale looking. So your post here is a big boost for me to look more into 143 scale racing.

Thanks!!!!!
