I think you have a track already :) Just start building cars.
Not that a new track isn't fun. We need little excuse to build new ones right?

From what I've seen with the builds the guys are sending for the drag race,I would say, like Harry start building. These boys are really doing the scale proud. To me,some run great on wood some don't.Kinda like the 1/32 stuff, but a little more difference...I mainly run mine on an Artin 1/32 layout..Mainly non-mag..

With a little work, nearly all 1/43rd cars can be mace to run good on a wood track. I like to run them on my 24m (72ft) wood track - called the "desmo". A quick forum search should show pics and videos of it.
You can also run 1/43rd cars on a bigger track, but personally i think they are more fun on a 1/43rd track.

Old Johnny,
One of the nicest things about wood is that you can set the lane spacing the way you want it. If chosen wisely, you can run 1:43, 1:32 and 1:24 cars all on the same layout.
Now I have run 1:43 Carrera GO cars on our routed MDF track. With some decent tires on them, you can get them to run quite well. Just don't try to take an untuned Carrera GO car and run it around an MDF track. You will not be happy with your results.
I've built several wire and brass chassis in 1:43 and I find they run exceptionally well on routed wood. As a matter of fact it was requested that I remove my 1:43 cars from our club track as I was embarrassing some of the 1:32 cars.
It is all about taking your time, adjusting your car and then running it around.
I'm sure you will have a grand time when and if you build your 1:43 track in MDF.
