Looking for 2-13/16" WB Chassis...

Postby Ralphthe3rd » Sun Sep 07, 2014 12:51 am

Hey guys, if you recall I'm new to this scale, and have so far, only been messing with the Artin and other cheap Chinese stuff.
Anyway, I'm looking to build up those Jalopy bodies I recently bought(see other thread), but the chassis I need, has have a 2 and 13/16" wheelbase, or very close to that. Since I don't know anything about SCX, Carrera or Ninco, can any of you tell me which of those chassis has the desired wheelbase, and/or maybe sell me one of those chassis ?....and it doesn't have to be new or even complete. But I Do NOT want to have to slice and dice a chassis like Ol Mike Does, nope, thats not for me. I do have enough talent(and desire) to convert/mount a chassis to my body, but, I also don't want to use one of those Resin Cast adjustable chassis either, sorry. I just want to make this as simple and sanitary as possible, ok.
Thanks, Ralph...

Pfuetz, thank you for the suggestions and help, but I think I'll pass on those 3D printed chassis, although the end results look fantastic :handgestures-thumbup: - But, too much work and money to build one of those. I should have also mentioned I'm wanting to build on the Cheap side. And if I was going the aftermarket chassis route, I'd probably have gone with the "Slider Chassis" like offered by 43Motorsports, as I have alot of HO Boxer motors laying around ;)
*sighs* :( This Jalopy project looks more complicated than first thought. Maybe I NEED to sub-contract the chassis build out to someone -like- OL Mike ? Or maybe I should stick with HO Builds, and just let the Grandkid run the Crap out of the stock Artins, and if he is still interested in a year or so, graduate him up to HO. :)

PS- in HO, I have dozens of chassis styles/types to choose from, in different widths and wheelbases, and can literally choose from 100's of Resin bodies to build any car, or racecar, from 1930's Jalopy bodies, right up to present day Prototypes.... but this 1/43 custom building is really frustrating to me

I have the solution for you with an Artin chassis and will publish pictures when I return home. Or maybe Tom Ward (Nerfbarz) will see this and publish a pic or two. He came up with this system. Cheap and simple.

Artin chassis are easy to work with and especially to adapt the wheel base. one cut in the chassis on the front end, 3 pieces of polystyrol and glue, you don´t need more. will post a pic later ...

Cjent and Pfuetz, I'm looking forward to seeing this Artin Stretched chassis mod you speak of, and that Tom Ward has done ? I originally didn't want to slice and dice, but if it's pretty simple, maybe this Caveman(me) can do it ;)

Thanks Guys :handgestures-thumbup:

Hey Ralph - if ya peruse the two 'pinned' threads at the top of this forum, you will find all kinds of very useful info and tools! There's even a jig to hold the Artin chassis while lengthening it using the slice and glue method. I've built many of these!

Basically, you cut the front half of the artin chassis and add 3 pieces of styrene, one for bottom and 2 on the side. Fix them with 2K epoxy and you´re done. Normally i fix them on one side first and let the dry. After that i glue the front half. The dimension is like a little press fit, in that way it´s easier to get the wheel base right.

Here is the link to what I use to lengthen Artin chassis wheelbase:

I can tell you from experience in this scale that the wheelbase is the least of your concerns!

Primary things to think about if you are converting a body of that type and wanting to use a standard chassis/running gear would be Wheel track (width) and size of the wheels themselves. You want a chassis that has large enough wheels to fill that space. and you don't want the track to be too wide.
I would suggest the Carrera 350Z OR their F150, both of those have fairly large wheels and a track that should work, You can cut and glue the Wheelbase to fit! :!:

I have been able to pick up the F150's @ Hobby Lobby for less than $10 on sale or Chuck could hook you up! ;)

Here is another option for stretching a chassis. We use the pins that one would buy at Walmart type stores .They are in the craft dept.Used for name tags and such.Work great and you can cut them down to size.

Well, This looks like the perfect example of why we can't get more people into 1/43!! It's simply too much work for most people!! I totally sympathize with Ralph, It's the main reason I avoid Carrera GO! cars.

Ralph, I was somewhat disappointed to read the above post, BUT I really think it's good for people to come out and say "hey, I am leaving" and let us know why! We can go on and on here about what we "think" the problem is, but with nothing to point to, we really can't get much traction with the Manufacturers! :violence-stickwhack:

That said, We wish you'd stay!

This scale is not really so challenging as it might seem! EVERY problem you might have we have all dealt with before, lengthening the chassis to fit a specific body is probably one of the easiest things to do (in any scale) If all I had to do to get a body to fit was adjust the length of the chassis, I would not have any projects on my bench!
