So since finding a printer on the cheap and playing around I want to try and print some of those guides that chappyman put on thingiverse (thanks dude) What I was wondering is a buddy got us some of the Devis printed guides and I’ve had good luck with them so would anyone know what they were printed with PLA,ABS ?

Good Luck sir. All my 3D guides have broken. Either at the post, sheared the blade flush with the bulkhead, or bulkhead itself where the wire/ferrel is inserted.

My real question is, is it worth it? When you factor on the cost of the printer material and time to print? Against let's say the two-pack Sloting Plus or Scaleauto at $6.00?

Is there a newer material that is stronger now for the smaller home printers?

Not trying to hijack or be negative...just curious?

As far as factoring cost I consider the printer a toy so after researching and shopping I had a pretty decent unit fall in my lap for less than half price how could I say no to a new toy :banana-dance:

First: The D3D guides were not PLA. I believe they were either nylon or carbon fiber impregnated PLA.

Second: the guide design (hole size and placement) and tongue design matters, as well as printing orientation. A brass tongue can break several designs when rotated far enough.

Third: printing parameters matter, since they can impact layer adhesion and this strength.

All of this aside, I am not here to defend printed guides. I don't sell them, I don't care. I just know they work well for my home track cars.
Finally: for what it's worth I know you can get carbon fiber PLA, but it's not something I have used at this time.

Bottom line: print if you like, buy if you like.....build slot cars either way.

Lot of folks here getting printers and making all sorts of stuff. I have no clue to material differences, design, etc.

So if there is a method on making a guide that lasts? I'm all for it.
