Shell from solid model

I am also cheap, and don't want to pay for lots of software.
Having said that....what options exist for taking the solid models and making a body shell out of it? I know the full CAD programs can do that but that solution is beyond my budget.
Do the mesh programs allow a solid model to be converted to a shell of consistent thickness for printing? If so, what free or online mesh programs would do this?
There are soooooo many bodies waiting to be printed....and hollowing out a solid model in TinkerCAD takes a lot of time with inconsistent results.
