Help creating brims for all body edges?

Postby asmith » Tue Apr 09, 2019 7:59 pm

Working with CURA 4.0 and asking for any help with creating build plate adhesion brim on all edges where body rests on build plate.

In this screen capture from CURA 4.0 only the rear and right side have a brim, and that's the way it prints out as well. With my Ender3 the first layers for front and left side don't adhere to heated plate without a brim.

I reloaded the original download file and found it only has a brim on rear section. Somehow I added the right side brim, but don't know how I did that. I printed the body okay with full internal support on, but wanted to try without support.

Appreciate any help - Alan

Might have found a solution, in CURA I slammed the body down by -1 in the Z axis.

Changing the Z-axis worked to create brims, but without the internal support structure the end of the body posts print mid-air. Time to learn a CAD program to extend the posts. I’d like to make the rear post larger as well.

Hi Allan,
I used styrene tubing around the rear post...so yeah.

Upload a modification....by all means. Otherwise I can do it this weekend some time.

Tubing - smart! On my first body the rear post broke off completely when taking the “support” out. Don’t have a Dremel right now. If you get to modding it great, but I have to learn a CAD program anyway, leaning towards Blender, what do you use?

If you are breaking off the posts when taking out the support material, print it up-side-down. That's what I did with the Porsche. I found it easier to take the support material off from the outside than to take it off the inside. As far as programs go, I've had better luck adding posts using Inventor but that is only a preference thing. I've had so mixed luck using Meshmixer to thicken the body parts but I still have to take the hand extruder gun out and add material, then sand it down.

I haven't taken the time to learn anything as complex as Blender or even the full capabilities of Meshmixer.
The Porsche was done entirely in Tinkercad.

This is how I do it in Tinkercad:
1) Open the body file, and create a copy of the body.
2) Make the post in the body, and a little longer so it goes into the "thickness" of the body.
3) Turn the body into a "hole" and combine it with the post. This shaves the post base in exactly the right shape to fit the body.
4) Move the post to the original body, and once in correct position combine with the body. This should merge it to make a one piece print.
5) Add some bracing at the base, if desired.

If you are breaking posts, try a couple of different settings in your slicer:
The strength of the supports (I run mine at 7-10% or less so they peel out easily)
The separation distance between the top of the support and the body (called vertical offset in Simplify3D). More separation = easier removal, but less support for the actual shape....which matters when you are doing dive planes on the front fenders etc.

Thanks ccobra and chappyman66. Printing the Porsche upside while doing the introduction lesions in ThinkerCAD.
