Looking for some ideas on brass scratchbuilt chassis :)

Postby MoparGreg » Fri Feb 15, 2013 8:56 pm

Hi everyone,

Im just finishing up my current project I have been working on & off for the past few months. It will be finished within the week. So I have been getting together some bits & pieces for the next project. The plan is to build a pair of 1956 Mopars for my 50's American Graffiti track.

The first is a 1956 Plymouth

Second is a 1956 Dodge

I have a rough idea on colors & the general look of them but Ill go into that later. I have decided to build some scratchbuilt chassis from brass for these. So Im looking for some ideas for these chassis. Im wanting a pretty basic design as my soldering skills need improving :) . So can anyone share any interesting pics or info for some chassis, weather your own built ones or interesting chassis that someone else has made.

I have my new Razor chassis jig to break in, cant wait. Sorry Jon Ive had the jig for months now & not used it, no excuses other than Im a slacker :)

ANyway any help would be great!

you can not go wrong, if you mess up you can heat it up and take it apart
what are you using for heat?
what kind of solder
K&S brass has everything you need, I can get you part # if you need them
the jail door with drop arm would work for both of the cars you want to build

Thanks MG, I had a look at all parts of the build articles. That looks great & simple. For these particular builds though Im wanting to build everything from scratch. In saying that, if things dont go to plan that modified womp is a great fallback.

Hey Jon, you make it all sound easy. Making a jaildoor with a droparm, I honestly wouldnt know where to start. I have a 60w soldering iron. I have a few different types of solder. I would have to check & see what they are. They all have flux. I also have a little jar of flux as well.

Must be a need for 4 motors somewhere...lol, not for me. Now MG...all that scale talk on the spoiler for the Charger and you show a chassis with Little Debbie donuts instead of wheels? geeeeez :) Just kidding with you of course.

Here is an option I used and I liked it.

Smith Speedway has these bulkheads for $2.50. For that price. I get them all day long. Better than making my own for sure.

You can mount them on flat brass stock or make your own. I used it here:

Just an example. I had a HnR that was a demo from years back that I had hacked on. So I just soldered the bracket in place, but a notch for the gear and away we went.

The time it takes to make one of these is not worth the effort at $2.50.

Of course they can.

Not for me though, but it is not made for guys like me. I want an easier to adjust wheelbase for a variety of hardbodies. My H&R's do that better IMHO.

In any event, my post was to show an easier starting point option for scratchbuilding. That little bracket does the trick.

The brass motor bracket from Steve Smith was originally made by Ferret, now made by a company called Sargent. I've only seen it on the Smith Speedway website, perhaps it's sold by others too.
