1/25 - 1/24 wheel and tire reference

A number of members have asked about sourcing of "scale" appropriate wheels / tires with the requirement for urethane rear tires in this proxy. Below I have noted some references to both wheels and tires that should fit the bill. These by far are not the only options - but are definitely somewhere to start.


For the wheels I stick to 5/8" hub examples as they equate to a 15" wheel in 1/24 scale. There are a large number of options in this diameter from multiple manufactures. Examples include:
Rear Wheels:
- H&R - multiple widths available, unfortunately, I have yet to find "bare" wheels available, so removal of the factor foam will be necessary. The slotted wheels that come standard on their ready to run chassis (also available separately) have a very deep offset that allows them to either be used as is - or offer sufficient room to allow use of an insert. Example model number for search purposes is: H&R Racing HR1201
- Pro-Track - Similar to the H&R wheels, multiple widths are available but again, no "bare" wheels so they too will require removal of the foam for use with urethane tires. The least expensive version (that works well for using inserts) is the "Pro Track TQ Custom Drag Rears" that has six round holes drilled in the face (example part number is 334). From there there is a WIDE range of "fancy" stylized wheels that can be used (example the "classic" series N404G). One thing to note - the "Slotted" Daytona wheels (example part N253) are a smaller, half inch hub and will not look appropriate for a 1/25 - 1/24 build.
- JDS - Similar to the WRP wheels, multiple widths are available but again, no "bare" wheels so they too will require removal of the foam for use with urethane tires. Offer a large number of 5/8" hub drag specific wheels (example: JDS 7028 Cragar)
- WRP - Similar to the H&R wheels, multiple widths are available but again, no "bare" wheels so they too will require removal of the foam for use with urethane tires. They offer both 1/2" and 5/8" versions of their wheels, so care needs to be taken to insure you are purchasing the correct version. (5/8" example: WRPW02)
- CB Design - The 1/24 wheels are available in both ribbed and ribless with "stock steely" and insert type wheel being the two styles available. The "ribless" version is what is needed to work with the majority of the urethane drag tires that are currently readily available.

Front Wheels:
Similar to the rear wheels, there are a fair number of options. Depending on the look that is desired, the options range from using narrower versions of the wheels noted above, to running "skinny" wheels. The skinny wheels are available largely in the desired 5/8", however smaller diameter versions do exist, so it is always good to confirm the wheels you are looking at are 5/8" diameter. The majority of the wheels that have the 5/8" hubs are listed as 3/4" overall size (5/8" hub with 1/8" o-ring installed equaling a overall 3/4" finish size). Three common vendors for the skinny wheels are Pro-Track, JDS and WRP. Most offerings come with o-ring tires in 1/8" with some including a slightly larger 3/32" cross section o-ring as an option. I personally find that these extremely small o-rings don't look very "scale", so I normally replace them with a 3/16 cross section o-ring. (these are part number -312) - the larger o-ring simulates a roughly 4.5" wide tire and tends to do a better job of filling the wheel well as well do to the larger overall diameter when installed. Example of the -312 o-ring being installed on a set of skinny WRP Halibrand wheels can be seen in the two pictures below:

An additional item to note!
- The majority of the "skinny" wheels are designed for use with a smaller 1/16" (.0625') axle - however there are also versions that utilize smaller .050" axles - so care should be taken when purchasing the wheels to insure they fit the axle that is being used for the build.

- Vintage Piecrust Sidewall

Paul Gage:
- 1/24 K&B Goodyear Large
- XPG 1/24 Drag Racing Tires (Narrow)
- XPG 1/24 Drag Racing Tires (Wide)

As Bob Taylor has noted in his reply below - he has appropriately sizes "TRU Tires" Taylor's Racing Urethanes that are available - details to follow!
