Racing fun at Jim Buffington's Center Super Speedway!!!

Postby TuscoTodd » Tue Jan 12, 2016 3:13 pm

This last Saturday APalmer and myself were invited to Jim Buffington's home to run on his impressive Center Super Speedway track!
:banana-dance:

The "Super Speedway" reference definitely fits this TKO track - as the lanes are 92 feet long and mix in a wide variety of corner types and radii along with the elevation changes that make for some great racing fun!!!

Here are a couple shots of the track:

First class of the evening was Racing Rigs!
This was a first for this track - but I think based on the fun everyone had - it won't be the last!

Starting off the action was:
Bob Young in red with the blue cab over tanker
Jim Buffington in white with the yellow vintage AFX Ryder rig
Tom DeLauder in blue with Mountain Dew machine
John Egan in yellow with the Pepsi Co hauler

Image

They were joined in rotation by:
Chris Ford and his chrome Shell Fuel hauler

Image

Aronn Palmer's Holley / Hooker Headers machine

Image

My white Shell tanker

Jeff Albitz's vintage AFX cab over hauler

To say that these rigs were entertaining - would be an understatement!
There was definitely a bit of a learning curve to figuring out the best way to get these machines around the track smoothly - with the tight inside corners of the yellow lane being a particularly cruel mistress - but everyone seemed to find their groove pretty quickly, making for some good racing!

One of the things everybody learned fairly quickly - when you stopped on one of the up hill grades, you had better use "low range" to eaaaaase off the line! Otherwise you were pretty well guaranteed that you were going to be looking for an assist from a marshal due to wheelie-ing "up & out" of the groove!

There was a LOT of great door to door action throughout the race - but when the checked flag dropped, it was John Egan's Pepsi Co hauler with podium gold, Jim Buffington's Ryder rig (we hope he wasn't carrying antiques in there!) with the silver and Tom DeLauder's caffeine fueled Mountain Dew rig locking up the bronze!

Image

Nipping on the heals of the leaders were:
My Shell rig, a half a lap behind, dodging stray Mountain Dew empties in fourth
Aronn Palmer's Holley / Hooker Header machine dropping the hammer to win out in the three way tie for fifth
Bob Young's blue and silver independent tanker in sixth
Chris Ford's chrome "auto eject" tanker keeping the eye one the prize a mere 5 segments behind in seventh
Jeff Albitz's AFX hauler finishing out the convoy in eighth

Definitely made for some good fun!

Now THIS is my kind of race report :)

Great read and photos. Seems to me these Rigs are becoming more popular then I ever thought.

Well done.

That's one good looking HO. Take it from a guy that has loved HO's in the past. What a great looking track and it looks as though you had fun too. That's what it's all about. Nice report on the get together.

Thanks for the kind words on the report thus far guys - but more to follow shortly as we ran two more classes! :D
The racers, track and host for this race were all top notch with lots of laughs, fun and tuning tips shared throughout the evening!
I had a blast and learned a good number of tuning tweaks and tips!
Definitely a great time!

Now on to race #2!

The next class for the evening was "stock" tjet racing!
The stock class here does allow a minor tweak in the wheel/tire area. Skinny double flange wheels with silicone tires (have to keep a min of .360" OD) with the allowance to go to a max width of 1 1/8" are allowed. (all other things remain stock however)

With that said - let me introduce you to the field!
First up on the grid:
Bob Young's white and blue vintage Chaparral in red
Jim Buffington's green Dino Ferrari in white
Tom DeLauder's white GTO in blue
John Egan's red "Bandito" Mako Shark in yellow

Image

They were joined in rotation by:
Chris Ford's purple GTO Judge

Image

Aronn Palmer's white Mako Shark

Image

My orange GTO Judge

Image

Jeff Albitz's red "Ol' Slippery" AMX

These cars were a blast on this track! With the skinny tires digging for everything they were worth, there was slipping, sliding, drifting and lots of great back and forth action!
:banana-dance:

When the checkered flag dropped - everyone looked around and went "Where did that Ferrari come from?!?" - it was Jim Buffington's smooth sailing Dino at the front to claim podium gold! This was followed by the two racers everyone had been watching battle in their run for the podium! It was Jeff Albitz's "Ol' Slippery" AMX sliding in for the silver with John Egan's "Bandito" Mako Shark keeping him looking in his rear view mirror for the bronze!

Image

Following our podium finishers:
It was my orange GTO Judge running around chasing John Egan's Mako - finishing within sight of his tail lights in fourth
Bob Young's Chaparral was picking them up and laying them down, to come across the line next in fifth
Chris Ford's purple GTO Judge was keeping Bob honest - constantly applying pressure - finishing in sixth
Aronn Palmer's Mako developed a temporary driveline issue while running the blue lane that slowed him up a bit - but after that, he blew the carbon out and charged forward coming across seventh
Tom DeLauder's white GTO proved to be a bit of a handful, finding itself seriously hunting for traction out of the corners, which kept both Tom and the marshals on their toes and unfortunately held the GTO back in eighth.

Definitely some entertaining racing! :D

The final class of the evening was Super Stock T-jet!
We had a combination of FRAY and ECHORR type builds in the field - with some of the best door to door battles of the night among the mid-pack contenders! :D
:banana-dance:

First up on the grid:
Tom DeLauder's gold GT-40 in red
Chris Ford's platinum Toyota Celica in white
Jim Buffington's orange and black Corvette in blue
Aronn Palmer's blue Lotus Exige in yellow

Image

They were joined in rotation by:
John Egan's yellow Corvette (sitting backward on the line - because he can!)

Image

Bob Young's blue Gran Sport Corvette

Image

Jeff Albitz's "Is that the Downy Car?" blue Bugatti Veyron

Image

My yellow (yes it still needs to be painted) Toyota Celica JGTC
