Good deal! I figure the cars alone about $25.00 each if bought separately.

Small things like guardrails, bridge and a grandstand mean little to some. But for me it adds the fun.

We get virtually nothing in 1/32 sets. Although Scalextric has improved the models, the new sets lack even guardrails.

they are beautiful Harry, and exclusive to the set... they sit a little high as normal, but there is a guy here in town that can whittle that down to a presentable car.

I am a set guy and love these tracks as much as the cars. But you gotta wonder if these small 9" radius tracks do the hobby justice? I recall how many cool sets Aurora put out in the early 1970s with multiple radius, S turns, banked turns and long straightaways! How long does a simple figure 8 hold a newcomer's interest?

You're best off buying modern AFX Tomy track sections to add on to or completely replace your AW sections. They are better made, offer far more diversity in track section choice, and just plain run smoother. The AW track is patterned after the AFX stuff. Don't be afraid to upgrade to at least a 20 volt power supply. AFX has a 15" terminal straight section where two separate power supplies can be plugged in, keeping each lane electrically independent of each other - no more power surges when the other guy comes off. Check out <afxracing.com> to see what's available.
On the other hand, as you said you're a set guy, just buy up a bunch of AW 15" straights and start enlarging the set from there. You have many options available to you.

Most of my AFX layouts in the early days were made up of the 9" standard curves and I had a lot fun racing on those tracks. Plus, I think it helps to keep the costs down since more of those curves are probably made than the others combined. Obviously, given the choice, I prefer a variety of curves but also understand that the sets are just to get you started and you can always expand down the road.
