Kurt, its kinda tricky, looking for these cars. For one thing, there were 4 engines, not 2 as we were told in those days at the VW dealers. The VW dealers sold them because the car actually replaced a hot version of the Karmann-Ghia, a gorgeous by-product of the 1500 Series of VWs (sedan, fastback, Kammback, called Type 3). The 6 cylinder was a 2L displacement, but so was the largest of the H4 engines. Both of the other H4 engines (1700cc, 1800cc), were slightly modified dual port 1600s, which were basically just like all VWs since 1970-71. But all the H4 engines were fuel injected and the H6 was carburetted. Confused yet?

At the time, the 5 speed transmission was the hot item, as was the look of the car. MG Mitten and the other car mail order catalogs sold a plastic film that went inside the center reflector (not a lit tail light), with PORSCHE written in block letters. That little film was as popular as the '40 Ford hood conversion for Beetles.

Thanks, guys. I haven't gotten to the serious stage yet, I've just been narrowing down the field. These cars are good value, IMO.

I like modern sports cars, but frankly, they're just too much car to drive them like they should be driven. But you can have a blast with the older euro cars, and slot cars like this one give me the fever for their 1:1 cousins. :)

Oh, I forgot about that. Yeah, that's right. I wonder if a chrome bumper can be swapped out? The cars for other worldwide markets didn't have that dumb looking rubber on them. Maybe you can get a '73 cheap and pretty it up?

I have to get one of these so I can model my 916/6.

Anyone who is considering purchasing a real 914, be particularly sure there is no rust
in the drivers side floor at the front where the pedal assembly mounts. Rust here
weakens the attachment of the pedal assembly and it can break loose.

If you are serious about getting a 1:1 914 go to 914world.com and check it out. That and the Pelican board are the two best sights for 914's. In So. Cal. the Porsche club is very good and schedules quite a few events from track days to full out racing.

The 1.7 can be a great engine if built properly and don't let anybody tell you you can't tune the fuel injection. It is not programmable from a computer (has no software) but, just like our little cars it is tunable if someone know what they are doing with electronics. The one in my 914, which was a former factory race car, was tuned and ran 2.0 fuel injectors. That gave me a lot more fuel and longer sustained time open on the injectors. That 1.7 made more power than the sixes.

Memories keep popping back in my head about this stuff every time somebody posts. The dual port VW engine in the 71 and following Type 3 VWs was fuel injected, and caught on fire a lot because there were a lot of tiny rubber hose connections (most with 90 degree bends that cracked and sprayed raw gas on the hot engine). The brain was a black box on the rear driver's side fender well. Most of them have been converted to dual carbs (mine included, remember the Squareback?). Do some research and make certain the fuel injection system is not the same unit. Life is too short to continually have to check that many little bits of rubber.

Thanks for all the insights. I've read everything you guys have said at least twice. :)

As a kid, I always liked the 914 shape, and hated reading the critiques that said it wasn't a 'true' Porsche. I like what Johnny said, it's not a wannabe anything now.

I tried to buy one from SRC and they wont ship it anywhere but Spain and Portugal. They are selling it for 50.20 pounds. Plus shipping.
Wished I had a friend in Spain or Portugal got one in the UK, no help there.
Want one of these so bad I can taste it!!!!!!

Porsche 914-6 GT is just such a wonderful race car. Just wish SRC consulted all of us here FIRST at HRW before they made this standard 914 version. Don't get me wrong, I do like it and SRC detail are very nice. However, If they do go ahead with making another, make sure it is this one. That way, I can drive over to Libra Racing and get John Buffum to sign mine ;)

SRC is run by the guy who originally made Fly cars... Rafael Barrios Sr. (his son now runs Slotwings/Flyslot)...
Flyslot will also be doing the 914 hopefully they will do the 914/6
