Best 1/43 set and cars? - Updated 01/10/2012

Gents, I need some help!

A local family that owns a restaurant in my town and supports our Elementary school with supplying food for teachers during nights when teachers hold conferences, etc. have 3 kids: a 6th grader, a 5th grader, and a Pre-K. (Boy/Girl/Boy).

The eldest boy in 6th grade had emergency surgery the week of Thanksgiving and the family is now struggling to pay medical bills, which as a self-employed family, are very steep. The school is taking up donations to help them and to help go shopping for the kids for Christmas since that is now in jeopardy as well.

Me, being me, would like to get them a 1/43 set with cars.

What's the best? Carrera, SCX....? What is easiest to setup and maintain - track and car-wise?

I see some really nice sets under $100 which is what I'm willing to spend. Any ideas or thoughts would be great!

David this is a very cool thing your doing. Try here, they have many sets in 1/43 under $100 and go as low as $59. From F-1 to Disney Cars.

I was water dipping motors today, and to fill in time was running various slot cars.

1/43 SCX F1 cars, thats what I was messing with most, they are AWESOME!!!

1.9 seconds out of the box, nice magnet, just really great fun and quick. They dont need a lot of room either (a small layout feels like a decent size instead of a skidpan).....

You can find 6 SCX Nascar liveries pronto (they come in pairs) and for not much money (a bit over the price of a medium priced 1/32 car will get you the half dozen).....

I think that will be my next foray in the slot car hobby...

I would suggest Carrera Go. They work great ootb. SCX is not easily available, Kyosho expensive and is something for guys who loke to tinked. Go! is great for a start.

This is very impressive. What Ed did here wasn't a business decision, it was just the human thing to do. :clap: Bravo, Ed! :clap: With you directing Carrera, I won't think twice about spending my money on your products as I know that it is used wisely.

Taking this further, could not donations of sets to various hospitals jump-start the slot car hobby? You'd have sick kids playing with real toys, not videogames, who can then take that happy memory with them when they get better. They’d likely continue buying sets and introducing others to the hobby for years. The videogame industry has done this for years through the Get Well Gamers and Child's Play charities. It would be great to see something like this sprout up for slot cars. We need to get kids away from the little glowing boxes and back to enjoying tangible toys.

Ed and Dave K - again, I can't thank you or Carrera enough! Dave K has the Cars Proto Corsa set on the way to me. I emailed my wife what we are doing and included a few pics of the set so she could take it to the school secretary that is arranging the efforts for the family. When she saw the email and pics my wife said she started bawling and could not believe that someone and a company would do this.

So, thanks to Carrera, I am going to take the cash I would have spent and add that to the cash collection they are taking up to help with medical bills.

Everything is going to be delivered to the family on the 20th, and I'll see if I can get pics to post here!
