The road less traveled: CA State Route 33...

Postby ChallengerGuy » Sat Jan 03, 2015 12:31 pm

I drove from Ventura (California) to Taft via Highway 33. (I had to take SR23 to get from Malibu to the 101 to get to Ventura). Let's just say I was the only car for many miles on SR33 and on top of that the only vehicle that was not a pickup, SUV, or big rig. LOL. It was great. Thankfully, I made the trek (with my boys and dog) at the peak of the winter sunshine yesterday. If you ever get the chance, with precautions (water, food, and good luck), it's a drive you won't soon forget.

Looks like the kind of road I love. Used to love driving up to the Sierras/Pinecrest State Park when I was stationed up at Merced; not as much "flatland" but lots of twisty-turnys.
Love the car, too.
Shotgun, there's a Challenger (white of course) around here with the license "KWLSKI".

Nice to know a road like that is still around. I just loved to just take off down a strange road in my youth. You got to see how well you have done with your car, back when cars were understandable. Open it up, and hear the engine sing. Those were the days.

I took off down a brand new very straight road in Florida many years ago, and there were almost no signs on it. Later, I found out that road is known as "Alligator Alley", and is now loaded with signs warning you that alligators sun themselves on that road a lot and going fast is virtually suicide. Even with that in my history, I took off down a strangely lonely, very straight road in New Mexico once, and saw things I couldn't believe existed, like several square miles of huge chunks of black volcanic glass with the road running right through it (Valley of the Fires), and the missile range just down the road from it, and the actual site of the Lincoln County Wars, still standing after all these years.

Challenger Guy,

Shhhh. Were trying to keep this area a secret. Now you done went and tole' everybody.

One of my favorite drives on a spring day with the top down on my Alfa. You need to keep going and end up out at Buttonwillow for an SCCA race then take the drive back by way of the 46. There is a tribute there at the spot where James dean had his accident and was killed.

Beautiful drive and a great car. I really like that one, now if I could just convince Dodge to make it in a convertible.

California is full of great sports car roads. My favorite is still Mullholland Drive. Topanga Canyon Road
has it's spots, too. Always made it a point of doing one of these when I was out there.
