1/32 Vintage NY Modifieds: Pinto X3, Gremlin X27, Vega #1

[Vintage 1/24]

About two years ago I paper-folded up a Vintage Asphalt Modified Pinto (and also a Vega, and some others that were commonly run in the early 70s). I had showed them to a few local racers and everyone seemed to like them well enough - so I figured it was time to refine these a little and post them up.

I made this one up as Jimmy Hendickson's #X3, because for me that was probably the first Pinto I had seen at Islip Speedway, and it made an impression.


LAMINATED PINTO ON CHASSIS-




The particular car is based on the 4 inch FCR - "slightly off" 1/24 scale I know - strictly it really comes in around 1/28 - but it allows the use of shorter diameter tires and lets these cars go FAST. And with the featherlight bodies and commercial style chassis these cars can really run on big tracks.

I will be doing these in 1/32 for a Womp, just like the other more contemporary "Tour Modifieds" I have been making on nymodifieds.com.


IN PROGRESS VINTAGE NY MODIFIED PINTO-




I scratch built the prototype chassis. It is straight up - not offset - and utilizes custom body mounts, fairly simple single rails, nerfs and bumpers - all part of the effort to replicate where those NY Modifieds were at that time - and all in an effort to get a simple folded paper form to achieve the "right look".

Inspired by the Reality Modifieds and various folded paper Dirt Modifieds - these Pinto, Vega, Gremlin, Chevette, Mustang II, Vintage NY Modifieds are really the cars I relate to from when I was a kid.

Plus there is a community of paper crafting car body shapes that is broader than was aware of - Thanks internet…

MARCH 1967 CAR MODEL MAGAZINE-




In the Spring of 1967, Car Model magazine featured a "Cut Out Your HO Little Red Wagon!" paper body on the front cover of the March issue.


AUGUST 1967 CAR MODEL MAGAZINE-




Later during the 'Summer of Love' in 1967 they offered "HO Cutout #5", a more complex form - the Hurst Hemi Under Glass.


I am sure this all had probably been done well before 1967 and like I said, over the years I have seen similar craft type projects, but it does show that fairly simple methods and materials can fool the eye - so another thing to pull inspiration from…

Really like the whelen modifieds bodies ,great detail on the paint schemes. The vintage pinto body should look just as good in 1/32 scale. the body looks so real. Cannot believe its made out of paper. I have the same whelen bodies we have been running on my bull ring for about two years. they really hold up well. We are ready for those pintos,gremlins chevettes,mustangs2s and corvairs! :banana-dance:

Love the Pinto. My guys would definitely be interested in these, especially with the Vega and gremlin to go with it.

Glad you like them - I think they will offer the simplicity of the 'paper' body (light weight, 'pre-painted with decals', and relatively sturdy) but with a real Vintage Modified look.

This one was 'finished' as the Richie Gomes X27 Modified that ran Islip Speedway in the early 70s.



ISLIP SPEEDWAY NY MODIFIED -





This cool looking Modified raced in the period right after the "Pinto Revolution". 'Len Calinoff PHOTOS' featured on the Gremlin's large C-pillars, advertised an Islip Speedway photographer who sold pix at the track.

I also have some Vegas I have to post up. If there is an interest I can add these to the nymodifieds.com site, and offer them to other Vintage Asphalt Modified fans.

I'm pretty sure you'll find interest in these. If you put these up for the Womp chassis, I'll buy some. Offering an undecorated one might make sense as well.
