1968 Nova in Trans-Am

Postby dreinecke » Thu Feb 19, 2015 12:03 am

So, I found a bad picture of this car about 10 years ago. I still can't find much info, but it is apparently legit. This is at St. Jovite, but only the Camaro and Mustang ran.

OK sleuths, anyone know anything? You know me...I HAVE to make it!

And these are not my pics, I found them a few years ago via Google.

Hi David;

I found this article that refers to the car in question, I presume. If so, you can also assume the car was indeed raced in TransAm.

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1 ... 197,828092

Then I looked at the Riverside and St Jovite races in SportsRacingCars.com and there is not even a mention of the Gagnon team.

A bit of a mystery, eh?

Have fun with your search, but it does appear that the car ran at Riverside that year. Hey, they drove Pontiac Tempests at Sebring, so why not a Chevy II Nova in TranAm. They were based on the same platform, I believe.

Cheers,

Keith

Or this one also proves it ran even if it was DNF. If it didn't run it would be DBS.

It is a mystery indeed Keith! One reason I haven't made a resin kit of this is that it has been hard to substantiate the car. After finding a few more pics, I think it is legit and was probably a DNF as Retro Shows. Problem is, I can't find who would have been the driver either.

As for Herb's Tempest - that is on the list to do!

Kris Harrison, Montréal Qc was listed as a driver of that Chevy II. I did a Google search for "Gagnon Spring racing team" and found this: https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&sou ... 6Yd4QO6ru0
It refers to the 1968 Trans-Am race at Watkins Glen.

The difference in the 1967 and 1968 road car Camaro was small.
The 67 had a no draft window, or quarter window on the front doors.
The 68 had a single full window on the front doors.
But we are talking race cars, so is it a 67, or a 68 with the no draft frame removed.
in the picture it appears to have a no draft frame, but I believe it is actually just part of the roll cage showing up.
Pretty much everything was interchangeable in the 67s and 68s, and even the Firebirds with the exception of the nose cone.
In 1969 Camaro went to the squared wheel openings where they had been rounded before.
But what racer would cut out parts to lighten a car even slightly lol

I seem to recall one year at the Daytona 24hr. race that a basically stock Firebird entered the race and I think was still running at the end, not winning but running. It would have been the early to mid 1970s

After translating French...not my best subject, it appears Robert Gagnon wanted to build a Canadian racing team similar to the successful Penske team in the USA. Hiring several drivers and starting in Mustangs and finishing 6th at Sebring in the T/A class, he purchased the winning Penske Camaro as near as I can tell after the race.

The Nova it appears, was built for Canadian regional races to be driven by Kriss Harrison. So, while a road racer, it appears that this car never ran in Trans-Am.

However, if I can get my hands on the Monogram 1:32 model...it won't matter - Maverick memories anyone? The car is too cool not to build this way.

I'm with you. I think it would make a great racer and i would run it right along side and TA car here.

Had to remind me of the Mavericks. A great Ford VS Chevy match up you can only get from modeling. I'm in.

Put me down on the double secret pre-pre order list.
