Harden Creek Slot Cars acquires Life-Like Racing from Walthers

Milwaukee, WI - Wm. K. Walthers, Inc., is pleased to announce that Harden Creek Slot Cars, LLC of Lakeland, Florida, has purchased the entire Life-Like HO scale road racing line. Owned and operated by Terry Flynn, who is widely known for his long-time dedication and support of HO road racing, Harden Creek offers a full range of cars and performance accessories.

Following the announcement, Walthers President J. Philip Walthers said, “While the acquisition of Life-Like Racing in 2005 provided us with a unique product line, Walthers has always been best known as the leading distributor in model railroading. With the sale to Harden Creek, we’re confident racing fans will see the line grow in both selection and popularity.”

This is good news. I have been a model railroader about as long as a slot car racer and worked part time in a hobby shop for twenty years that carried both. When Walthers bought Life Like to get the Proto 1000 and 2000 HO train lines, we knew it was only a matter of time before the slot cars would be dropped. Walthers started "blowing out" on hand slot car stock to dealers a few years after taking over Life Like and production slowed to a stop.

Walthers had always considered slot cars "the enemy" after they surged to popularity in the sixties, displacing trains for a number of years. With such a corporate culture, we knew the slot car part of the business wouldn't last long. It's good to see them in better hands at last. This may allow the Life Like slot cars to go back into production and thrive again.
