Anyone Have Info On FK-130 Motors?

Postby Florida_Slotter » Sat Jan 23, 2016 4:12 pm

I've been pretty much restricted to laying flat on my back in bed. But I am still trying to keep my head and hands in the game. The "patient tray" that Hospice has provided to me allows me to do a bit of minor tinkering on my slot cars.

After feeling almost human one day last week, I had a chance to run some laps on my Sideways Porsche Group 5 car that I replaced the Slot.It Flat-6 motor with a Slot.It FC-130 Orange endbell motor. I retained the anglewinder drive configuration and am very pleased with the initial testing results that I have observed. The car now weighs 68 grams, accelerates quicker, has awesome brakes, and handles superbly.

Well I tried a similar approach with an LMP car, but there is NOT enough room under the body for the motor to fit. I had an idea :techie-idea: There was a JK Retro Hawk 25 sitting on the workbench. This is an FK-130 form factor motor . . . . . same diameter as the Slot.It Flat-6 motor, just a bit shorter. Looks like this motor might do what I want.

Now, does anyone have any "spec" data for this motor? Sure wish Robert Livingston would upgrade his motor list to include this motor.

Found this on PM's site if it's any help...

JK Hawk 25 Motor - 25,000 RPM - High Torque - Dynamically Balanced - CLOCKWISE rotation looking into shaft end - use for 1/32 or 1/24 racing cars, NOT compatible with home racing wall pack power supplies - requires 3+ amps minimum power supply for proper performance - 2 x TSRF Part Number TSC17 M2 Metric suggested for motor mounting screws - Not suitable for inline 1/32 application where axle gear is piloted by motor shaft (shaft is too short)

Marty, the FK130 motor is the same height as the FC130 motor. I just measured several FC130 and FK130 cans and they all range between 11.0mm and 11.3mm One was a falcon or hawk motor from one of my 1/24 retro cars. The flat 6 from slot.it is unique and I assume specifically designed for the slot.it LMP cars.

ModlerBob,

The reason I have a lot of interest in the JK Retro Hawk 25 is that I have used it in a car that I built for racing with the guys in Ocala. It was without a doubt, more then competitive. I think it will be a motor choice for LMP cars because of it's form factor. It should provide some weight savings, which will allow you to distribute added weight as low as possible.

If all goes well today, I hope to have one installed in my ew Slot.It Lola Aston Martin DBR-1. I'll let you know the before and after weights. I do know that by putting the FC-130 Slot.It orange endbell motor into one of my Sideways Group 5 cars, the weight is now 68 grams!

Stay tuned.

I hope it fits. They may have redesigned the rear deck on the Aston Martin version but I know a FK130 motor won't fit in the earlier Lola LMP cars from slot.it.

I went back to my work bench and took the flat 6 motor out of one of my slot.it Lola LMPs and installed a FK130 motor. When I tried to reattach the body it made contact with the top of the motor leaving about 1 mm gap at the bottom of the body and chassis. I suppose a shim could be attached to the body mounting post with no adverse handling effects and the gap between the bottom of the body and the edge of the chassis would be barely noticeable. The reason a FC130 motor really won't work is the location of the motor leads on top of the can while the motor leads on a FK 130 motor are on the face of the motor as there is no end bell. I don't think the plastic in that area of the body can be shaved any thinner without risk of breakage. So, in a manner of speaking, the FK130 motor can be installed as long as one can live with the body/chassis gap. I also don't know if or how that would affect the car's handling.

ModlerBob,

I WAS WRONG ! ! ! ! !

While my Lola Aston Martin has a bit more clearance - about .5 mm - I am going to say LMP cars with their very low bodywork where the motor resides just needs to have the Flat-6 that Slot.It brought.

I will continue to work on this. There has to be a way of doing this WITHOUT having to purchase the "Inline" body that Slot.It sells.

Sorry about causing confusion and additional work for you. However it appears to something very important to you.

So far the LMP bodies from slot.it are the only anglewinders that limit motor choice. They might perform better with a different motor but they aren't bad with the flat 6. Since I have a programmable controller I can just use a setting that produces a smoother power curve.

Florida Slotter, i'm highly interested in how you put the orange Slot-it motor in your Sideways Porsche.

Do you kept the original motor holder ? Use adaptors ? Could you please post a picture ?

I always found the Flat-6 motor too heavy for these cars, the front is lifting up and the rear has too much weight....and the chassis is too soft.

Sure a more lighter motor will solve these problems and make the car faster and much important, easyer to drive.

I never found a correct adaptor to do this.....apparently you did found a solution, good job.

LanciaB,

Good news, bad news.

I found a set of adapters that allowed the FC-130 motor to be placed in a Slot.It anglewinder pod with no modifications necessary to the pod.

The adaptor was purchased a few years ago from the fine folks at Slot Car Corner. However they are out of stock without a source to re-stock.

Now, I have heard some very serious rumors about a small company making a Slot.It compatible pod that will mount the FC-130 motor without the need of any adapters. I am looking forward to seeing this pod come about very soon.

You are 100% correct in your analysis about less weight, better handling, etc. I know my Sideways Porsche 935 that I put the FC-130 motor with the adapters runs very, very well. I am quite excited about what I have heard.

Right now I am bed bound because of health issues. If I can, I will post some photos of the Porsche.

Thank you for your kind answer.

I've also read that with some screws you could just fix the s-can engine in the holder.

I hope you'll get better soon, don't worry about the pictures.

LanciaB,

I just heard that two FC-130 anglewinder motor pods are headed my way via USPS. Hope to possibly have them by the weekend. If so, I will modify my Lancia Group 5 Sideways car.

Stay tuned.
