Collector's Corner - Pioneer J-Code Red Camaro

Some might have seen versions of this on the big bay. This one is slightly different as all of these seem to be. Which is what makes it such an interesting model to me.

This was sent in a package for our race event to be awarded as a door prize. A very gracious gesture on Jules' part.



I am mostly ignorant of all the different J-Code models as I am not a pure collector. I asked about this car and the report directly from Jules really adds to the interest.

The red Camaro was produced during tool testing. There are 1000’s of different types of styrene available and sometimes we change the blend to see if it gives a better finish, or molds faster, or ejects better...or the parts fit nicer. Most molders will run tests in a duff re-ground plastic just to get the mold up to temperature. We have access to some high quality color material so it allows us different shades through now and again. Also, depending on the final paint colour for the car, it does help to have the body shell in a shade of plastic that is somewhat close to the actual paint finish. Always looks more tidy inside the shell and prevents us having to paint spray the entire inside.

11 of those red Camaro shells were saved from the re-cycle bin and you have one there. The factory code for that test assembly was: J071212

Interesting story to go along with that car. You should print out the note from Jules and include that for authenticity.

I have never been a collector, but from what I understand, some document that goes along with the piece can make a big difference in its value. So whoever wins this car, Don't paint it!!!!

Nice idea to post that red Camaro, Harry.

From my point of view, I think there is something very 'retro' about models produced largely with the same color plastic. It reminds me very much of the Hong Kong made plastic model cars that I was familiar with in the late 60's and early 70's but, hopefully you'll agree, these modern ones are of a substantially better design and quality.

It is interesting that, as a kid, you did not need all the fancy paint work and the fine detail and correct trim pieces for the model to have play value - your imagination filled the gaps in reality.

I see 1000's of different pieces of colored plastic model car parts on a daily basis and I'm pleased to say my fascination for all the bits and pieces that go together to make these great toys has not dimmed yet.

It's interesting because that is the "SS" hood and not the Z/28 cowl induction hood that was on the T/A cars.. :think:

Dave, that vented SS hood was used early in the 1968 season, certainly on the Penske Cars but most of the time it was a plain jane hood on the proper T/A cars.

I don't think they used a cowl induction 'high' hood until the 1969 season by which time it was a different shape Camaro (1969 MY) altogether.
