Doug: on the second Ferrari 512 CL pic on this page, the gold colored wheels are well accented. Did you use a fill light from the side to bring out this detail or did the larger overhead tray accomplish that too?

Shooting edge-on to the white base layer keeps it unobtrusive yet reflective. It's basic but not obvious (to me, at least) how you achieve some of your effects.

If I can manage to talk my wife out of two of her thousands of shoe boxes, I'm going to try to make a shoe box softlight. The extra depth should make the light a little less contrasty by getting the source light further away from the diffusion material...lining it with white paper will even it out even (no pun intended) more!
