Challenger/Javelin wheels

Postby Dodgefarmer » Tue Nov 27, 2018 12:17 pm

Hey guys, I'm trying to put urethanes on the new Challenger and have discovered that Scaley has upped the O.D. of the outer edge of the wheel by about a mm. while decreasing the O.D. of the rib by about 0.5 mm (IIRC, I can only remember 1 thing at a time these days  ). Any ways I was wondering if any one has measured a Javelin wheel.

Thanks
Randy

The latest Scalextric wheels are supposed to mimic the dimensions of aftermarket wheels like the ones from Slot.it and CB Design, so tires that fit the aftermarket wheels should also fit the Scalextric wheels.

They are supposed to, but they are not exact. As I show in the review, there is a diameter issue with the wheels on one side.

For users of urethane, not an issue. They are easily sanded as I show.

For silicone users it IS.

Thank you Harry and Rich for your replies. It now appears that I am dealing with a different design here.

Image

The axle at the top of the pic is the #77 Challenger wheel while the axle at the bottom is the NTVP Challenger.

The crucial difference is the OAD's of the rib and the inner, outer surfaces. The #77 wheel measures 0.484" Inn., 0.490" Out., and 0.575" Rib, while the NTVP wheel measures 0.525" Inn., 0.530" Out., and 0.557" Rib.

Our club rules for Vintage T/A dictate that the wheels must remain stock, so even after truing over 1mm off the tire I will still have a large air pocket under the center of the tire. Oh well I guess I'm going to have to be "creative"

Thanks again
Randy

The street version of the Challenger use a different wheel than the race version did. The white car and the pink car are different from the green race car that car uses a standard TA wheel size.

What levels of creativity does your club allow if the wheels are supposed to be stock? And why would the 'air pocket' be a disadvantage or problem if all cars meeting specs have it?

Or, are we talking about 'stock as defined by Smoky Yunick or Roger Penske from Trans Am days?

Randy,
The wheels from the pink car measure as follows Rib .55". Inner and outer .52" I took a tire off of a regular TA wheel. It fits on this wheel with no issues. It was probably a 1102 Yellow Dog. May be the 1101 or 1105 because it is closer to 9.3 mm wide. Sorry my Caliper only goes to 2 digits in inches. This tire may fit the new rim as well. There was a thread not sure where about filling the space on a Carrera wheel. The person used a Gel CA glue and then sanded the spot as required.

Thanks Arrold. Your wheel is Identical to mine. I'll check out the 1101 and the 1105 as I really did not like the poor fit of the 1102R that I tried using.

Dodgefarmer - thanks for the reply and info. It's been decades since I raced in a club and back two guys a week would draw inspector duty to tech cars before racing. We were all running Parma wheels with pre-glued foam tires back then so only the diameter was checked. Looking back, some guys probably got pretty creative with what they soaked their tires in between races, but as long as the tires weren't tacky during tech it wasn't an issue.

I asked because back then those of us who ran in the modified class knew tricks newer guys didn't, so if enough guys showed up the feature winning modified guys would sit out the stock class race to give more guys a chance to get to victory lane.

You're welcome slothead. Our club tries to keep the cars fairly close to original to help keep costs down. In the T/A class the only 3 mods we are allowed are tires, guide and a minimal amount of clearancing to achieve body float. As long as the cars appearance does not change and all components remain in the original locations, how we achieve those mods is up to us.

Masking tape wrapped around the hub and trimmed to the width of the rib will build them up without changing the 'stock' wheels, and if complete revolutions without overlapping are done they're pretty round. It's worked for me in the past.
