Front Drive slot car drive shaft replacement

Postby John R » Thu Dec 20, 2018 8:19 pm

I have a Scalextric Front motor Viper I need to replace the drive shaft on. Are there any videos on removing and installing them. Anyone have any tricks or tips?

Thanks
John

I found a lollipop stick that is a plastic tube which is a perfect fir on the motor shaft and I used a bit of that to replace the spring. I turned the shaft around so the splined end was at the motor end and used a brass pinion instead. It made for a quieter runner.

To get the old one off I just used needle nose pliers and prize the spring off a small bit at a time while gradually moving the pliers in from the pointy end to the thicker end (if that makes sense). Measure the overall length of the original and I just squeezed it on in a vice until it was the correct length. If you're going to use the spring you might find it better to put it on the motor 1st because the spline on the shaft makes it a bit more difficult to slide on.

I should have a new pack of springs if you need them. I’ll know for sure Wednesday.

When I change em, I hold the drive or motor shaft with a needle nose, and twist the spring with my fingers in a threading direction which opens or relieves the gripping pressure of the spring coils and with a bit of pulling apart pressure of the two the spring easily leaves the shaft. Mindful of the location position of the spring and shaft- hold the driveshaft again with pliers, and 'thread' that buggar back on twisting with your fingers. Repeat either to perfect the location you are happy with

Cheers

I don't like the spring at all. I hold the motor shaft with needle nose pliers and pull the spring off, wrecking it. I use a section of an old ballpoint pen cartridge as a superior replacement, as many of us have done on HRW after Harry came up with it. I have also used clear vinyl tubing.

+1 on the ball point pen. The bic pens I use have a clear cartridge and slide on nicely. The springs give a vibration and there heavy which takes more torque to turn. I just did a Scaley Viper and it runs great now.

I used a section of 18 gauge (speaker/household) wire insulation/sheathing with the copper wire strands removed. Works with lower powered cars and is slightly more flexible than some of the other alternatives.

Yep. That's just like the vinyl tubing.
