The Carrera 917-30 is 67.5mm wide and is sold as a 1/30th scale car as to the Lola 222 that is 67mm wide (decal on outer case)
Slot-it M8D is 61.3 at the rear and 58 at the front, 2E is 60 rear, 56 front
Thunderslot T70 spider is a tad over 64 at the rear and 59.5 up front, the M6A is 63.5 rear and 62.5 front
HRRS M8D is 64 rear and 60.4 front

Remember its not the body width that is where the handling comes from, its the front and rear track as measured from the out sides of the contact patch.

A worthwhile project would be a 917-30 on a well sorted HRS2 chassis, this would be hard to beat, I had such a car years ago in the NZ CanAm proxy, but that was before Thunderslot came on the scene.
With the NZ CanAm proxy a few years ago we quickly saw the wider cars had a real advantage over the earlier CanAm cars.

As CanAm progressed from 1966 to 1973 the cars got more powerful and wider making it very difficult to get some sort or even pace between the slot cars so what we did was to have 2 classes within the hole group.
Those with a body width less then 62mm and those over, this did help to give the narrower cars a chance to have their own battle among themselves.

Outlawing the T-S cars may be a waste of effort as it wouldn't take much to fit a different brand CanAm body on to a T-S chassis.
I'm sure it's mainly the chassis that makes the Thunderslot cars so easy to drive)
Maybe a motor limit on all cars that are using a Thunderslot could work.
Just a thought.

Some thoughts

Looking at an admittedly small sample of cars (see data below) it appears that setting a limit for the width between the outer sidewalls of the rear tires provides a simple way to regulate cars. I'd suggest something like 61 or 62mm would accommodate the majority of cars. The body width doesn't really matter - if someone wants to lug around a grossly overscale Carrera 917/30 body on a restricted width rear track, good luck.

Width across the outer sidewalls of rear tires:
Revell McLaren M6 - 54.2
Revell Lola T70 - 59.0
Fly Lola T70 Mk III 61.0
Thunderslot Lola T70 Mk III - 61.0
Slot.it McLaren M8D - 61.2mm
Slot.it Chapparal E - 61.2mm


While Group 7 cars did grow in width in the first two years of Can AM, by 1968 most of the front runners (McLaren, Lola, Chaparral, Ferrari) were about as wide as the cars would get. Many of the early entries were one-offs that weren't well documented, so even finding the actual dimensions may be difficult, never mind policing their scale equivalents in a proxy :roll: . While the rivet counter in me nags for scale authenticity, the realist votes for the simplicity of a one size fits all measurement. If you simply MUST have an accurate scale McLaren M6A with Bruce at the wheel for your entry, running a narrow car against later, wider models is the price you pay.

Thanks for the input and feedback on the Can-Am cars and possible rules to help to level the playing field.

I measured my last year's Slot.It McLaren Can-Am car and the rear tires on it are 61.2mm outer sidewall to outer sidewall. I also measured my TS Lola T-70 Can-Am car and it was 60.2mm for the same measurement. Reading the other posts and the measurements that have been made, I'm thinking that the track is more important than the width of the car. I understand that a maximum body width also dictates the maximum track on a car; but it's car-to-car specific to a certain extent. So, since we're in the process of trying to find an acceptable answer to the track issue, I would propose that we say that the track; rear and front, can not exceed 62.0mm outer sidewall-to outer sidewall. That does take the Carrera 917-30 out of the series and it certainly was a purpose-built Can-Am car; in fact some say that it was the car that killed the Can-Am series, but that's another topic. But, its also clearly over-scaled for this 1/32 scale proxy; like the 1/28 Vanquish cars.

The revised wheel rule would then read:

"Tires: ANY Rubber tires; provided that they do not alter the period look of the car. The maximum track; front and rear, may not exceed 62.0mm measured outer sidewall-to outer-sidewall."

Let me know if you're all OK with this limitation; if you are, then we have a solution for this year's race.

Separately, if the Betta & Classic resin bodies are not super-light and if they do not look like low-detail lexan/polycarbonate stamped bodies, then I am fine allowing them in this proxy, since the rules already stipulate that resin bodies are allowed.
