Hi again folks,
More news on the sponsor front! Our next sponsor has become a household name in the North American basement and club racing over the last dozen years – especially those of us who race on wood. Some call him the tire maker to the stars, we just call him Paul – or Mr.Gage to his friends ;O)
This year’s Tourist Trophy will be raced on a spec tire specially made for this year’s event by Paul Gage Tires. Paul has been gracious enough to stake each team to enough sets for their testing, tuning and race needs. Thank you sir! A side note about this year’s spec tires, one of the 2 sizes available is of the LM-DF variety – as in the Le Mans (lower profile) tire but with the “slits’ or channels that fit and fill the air ride gap you see in the NSR tires. A very nice addition which has helped a few of us gain a few extra and precious tenths ;O)
A brief little bio about Paul and his tire making journey…
Paul started making tires in 2006 when all his silicone tires proved to be inadequate at his local home club. His competitors were all using handmade urethane's from a local source. Since then, we’ve come to know silicones and urethanes do not play well together. Paul did his homework and listed his product on eBay way back in 2007. At first his tires were all re-pops. But beginning in 2009, Paul introduced his first “PGT collection” of sizes. And did you know, his collection of tires has grown 90 different sizes today? For scratchbuilders and for those of us who like to experiment, that sort of selection is a real luxury. I know my local club has over time gravitated to Paul’s tires due to the sheer variety he offers, not to mention performance.
For those unfamiliar with urethane tires. You typically don’t see them breakdown like stock rubber tires. They are easier to true than silicone and don’t ball up like rubber tires can when truing. You don’t really need to worry about a dust free track like you do with silicone tires. Just glue and true and away you go....okay add ina step to "polish" them too
Something else unique about Paul’s tires, he offers them in two different softness – his Extreme (XPG) and Standard (PGT) grip. Nothing like trying to choose the right compound for your racing needs :D
By the way, if you ever need help in deciphering what Paul’s tire coding refers to, this is probably the most useful document out there to help guide you, thanks Christian!
