Thanks wobble. I'm going to pull the trigger and get that Carerra Torino next week. Something else for the Cyclones to race against.

I was up most of the night last night babysitting an unrelated project and decided to paint the Cyclone out on the deck early this morning. My modeling skills (or lack of) triumphed again and the results were unimpressive.

I washed the body, hood, and rear panel last night and dried it with a paper towel. The first coat of gloss white paint + primer went on smoothly except for a spot on the rear of the roof and rear deck which were blotchy. Looked just like what Ken posted pictures of before when he warned about some release agent possibly still being on the body parts. I could have stopped at that point to strip the body and start over but on 2 hours sleep I shrugged and laid down 2 more coats of paint - none of which stick to those blotchy areas.

Well, that pretty much killed any idea of this car being a decent replica of the Wood Bros Cyclone so I decided to skip painting the roof and rear deck red and instead applied some red model airplane monokote (plastic film) over those areas. Not great, but not bad either when you consider the blotches now hidden from view. This Cyclone will NOT look like what Waay and Ken and others are doing - creating good replica liveries. I'm thinking about mine this way - imagine a 19 year old kid finds a '70 Cyclone and decides to enter it in the bomber street stock class at the local short track. Working from some photos of the Wood Bros car he gets a hold of some white and red paint and has at it. A drunk buddy or two pitch in to help. Despite some flaws it's gonna look okay from the bleachers. Now he just needs to put some sort of # 21 on the door panels and roof and go racing.

My Cyclone will be a faithful representation of that kid's car. I will post a photo of it at some point but at the moment have no idea where my camera is.

I've just been fiddling around with some modelling files and some fine sand paper and thinking, life's good.

Goose, I'm making the same decision. I'm leaning toward the windshield braces front and rear, and a net in the driver's window. Maybe a fire extinguisher to catch the eye looking at the inside.

That's exactly what I was thinking of doing too, but did the cars run with fire extinguishers in them back then?

By the way, I found a solution for a window net by cutting up dollar store fly swatters!

There was a tip on HRW years ago for the scale netting, but I can't remember it. You solution saves me hunting.

Oh, and I meant to say earlier, the only reason I thought about the fire extinguisher was the inclusion of them in the Carrera Torino, Roadrunner, and Chargers. I have no idea what is right. I never thought aboput it. Dang. Now I'm on the trail of fire bottles! I have a NASCAR book that may help.

Well, my build has hit a major snag. I applied decals last night, same as every other car I've ever built, but this happened:

Image

No amount of Micro Sol or Set has made a difference, and now the gold around the top number is turning dark from repeated applications of said solutions. Decals are by Pattos, a brand that has never given me an issue before this. I've seen clearcoats affect decals like this, but there is nothing on top of these.

Does anyone have any magic solutions for smoothing out wrinkled decals?

Goose, you are no the only one having decal problems. I ordered a new set of paper online and today tried to have them laser printed and almost all of them were ruined. I gave up after wasting half the pack. I need to find out if I had previously purchased a different brand or something. As of right now stocks of decals are running rather low for the 48 and 92. I also worked up an 89 set and it too suffered almost complete failure with just a few sets salvageable.

There is a problem with this brand of decal paper and I need to find the on I had used before. If not I will have to only offer street decals once these run out.

Currently mass painting cars using this fixture made of a 2X4 and pvc pipe.

Here are the first of my tax money cars currently on ebay-

I ruined a couple with clear coat issues.

That is a sad picture. Is there a difference between the orange cars and the others, in terms of the application of paint followed by decals, and then something else?

I was very cautious about the clearcoat for this reason.

Well I decided to pay my taxes out of pocket.

This has been a complete disaster, with hours of wasted time. I left this car out in the baking sun for DAYS. It was dry, but then I hit it with gloss spray clear and disaster again!

Image

The only possibility that just came to me is the white paint. It is the same brand, but I think it might be a junk can or something. It simply does not stick. After putting on the clear you could just take your finger and wipe off the paint all the way down to the blue plastic. The clear simply softened it completely.

The red also lifted the white when I tried to paint over this.

Image

I am pretty frustrated by this repeated failures and then with the exact same process things look great. The only variable seems to be the white color paint.

I am going to try to switch to Krylon...................

Don't get disheartened. What you have there is with 91% alcohol, bad base primer, reacting with a primer with no base. Go back to the base. Scrub the base with Wesleys Wite. Use a serious primer like Tamiya, and start again.

I should add, I took a hell of a fall tonight, and didn't have a lot of time to do anything else. I'm okay. But stick with the model. It will come out fine
