Artin is Artin! and I can't see much point in complaining about them, generally with all old slot car companies Like Artin, Jouef and to a lesser extent Scalextric (anything before Fly appeared) the listed scale was the "Nominal size" in other words the scale would vary somewhat, 1/43 would really be somewhat in the middle of their range, with some cars being bigger, BUt most were closer to 1/48. Also, you have to factor in that like Many HO cars, Artin's bodies are made to fit their standard chassis which are fairly limited in range. That is why a small car like an RX-7 would appear bigger then the 280-Z! They have to blow up the proportions of the car to fit the chassis!
I had dipped my toe in the 1/43 pond several times, first with Artin, then again when Carrera GO! came out and finally jumped in with both feet when SCX Compact came out. I Championed the Compact cars as the wave of the future and took quite a bit of flack from the 1/43 old timers round here whose world rose and and set with Artin! SCX did eventually cause a seizmic shift in the 1/43 world, Routed tracks and no magnet running where almost unheard of and heavy magnet running with monster motors was the order of the day; now 6+ years down the road and with the introduction of Kyosho 1/43ers finally have something to hang their hat on and run with no appologies or excuses!!
I do believe that early Artins really discouraged the real enthusiast in this scale, but on the other hand I have rediscovered the Artin Chassis, for certain builds it can be ideal and with a little work can run pretty well. :banana-rock:
In any case complaining about Artin is like looking in the rearview mirrow, lets keep an eye out in front of us instead! ;)
