Originally the V8 Supercars only had two eligible cars a Holden Commodore (GM) and a Ford Falcon, both of which are locally designed and produced here in Australia (though they may share features common to the GM and Ford lines as well in the world). The GM vs Ford battle here in Oz is very much whether you are a Holden or a Ford man - and the rivalry is as fierce as any other around the world.
This year they have introduced Nissan and Mercedes into the lineup of eligible cars. I think to widen the appeal, attract a more global audience and because I think Ford are dropping the V8 Falcon from their lineup in a couple of years time.
This is only a recent story as in the past the Touring car racing in Australia - which the V8 Supercars evolved out of has had all sorts of makes and models, but the long term battles have been the Holden vs Ford
