My new Pioneer Chevy Camaro and Scalextric Penske Camaro

Postby Austin » Tue Nov 12, 2013 6:51 pm

Well I got my 1st Pioneer Chevy Camaro today and it is from a USA dealer. Not the Blue Sunoco because I all ready have the Scalextric Sunoco Camaro and didn’t need two of the same. So I pick the PacificTeam #23

Part 1 , The frist look

Image

Rip the bubble rap off will you

Image

Image

I must say looking at it in the case it is beautiful, OK out of the box and setting on the track.

Here is a photo of the Scalextric and Pioneer cars side by side. You can see the Scalextric Camaro is much wider

Image

Image

The front of the Scalextric all so rounds downward in the front and the Pioneer doesn’t

Image

In the rear the Scalextric sets lower with a much larger rear spoiler, you can all so the big different in the front spoilers

Image

Image

Next we will go to the wheels, The front wheels on the Pioneer spin freely, plenty on clearance around and in side of all the wheels and tires.

Image

Image

The Scalextric Camaro all so has plenty of clearance around the wheels and tires.

The Pioneer Chevy Camaro is more or a street Trans-am car that dealers would enter and the Penske Camaro the factory teams.

Part 2, The stock out of the box test drive. Later

The first 200 laps, Box stock

Scalextric is up first

It was hard to put the rear of the car from spinning around. Had to strat out very slow but as the laps went be the car handle better and better. The the more laps the fast the car could handle the turns

Image

Pioneer is up next

The tires seam much softer so the car was alot faster, The tires were alot more out of round and the car did alot of hopping desloting 4 times. Oh no Oh no the rear tire is rolling down the track. After 123 laps the rear tire came off.

Part 3, Oil, True wheels and tires and run 200 laps each

Good job on the write up, for what its worth you do know the Scalley is a 1969 model year vs, the Pioneer a 1967 (it has vent windows the only year to have them), the 69's were wider, longer & lower in real 1 to 1 size,, have a 69 RS SS 1 to 1 sitting in the garage.

Normal recommended pitstop for lug nut tightening is 120 laps, Austin. :!:

Thanks for taking the time to post your race adventures so far.

I entered my Penske Camaro in a Trans Am race in Jacksonville, Fl. last Sunday on an 8 lane routed mdf track that includes a 30 ft. +/- straight section. With the exception of the first heat in which my car picked up a screw from a car in an earlier race that caused it to deslot upon reaching the next turn, it was very competitive against it's Scaley cousins. Throughout the remainder of the race it ran well and I was able to overtake one car and finish in fifth, two laps out of fourth. I lost approx. 12 laps in that first heat. The format was crash n burn 2 minute heats with a track call at one minute to reslot cars that had crashed. I think I managed 2 laps in the first heat. The car managed to finish the race without loosing any parts. I had fully expected to lose one or both of the extra road lights and the outside mirror. No tire or wheel problems occurred. But I did spend some time prepping the car including switching to PG tires in the rear. Great little car.

So today I pulled the Pioneer Camaro apart. First pulled the wheels and axles off. The axles look a lot like Slot-it axles. The 4 wheels pulled off without any damage to the wheels at all, I love it. You can use any after market parts with these axles, bushings, gears, and wheels if you like. There are 3 clear washers on each side up front and two in the rear. There was no signs of any oil

Image

The front bushings are plastic and fit just a little loose ( a nice alignment design ) but are held in the chassis firmly.

Image

Image

The rears are brass and fit in the chassis firm. There is some slop between the axle and bushing. These are not SCC racing bushings and with the plastic gears will do fine.

Image

Image

For truing the wheels I used my Huby tire truer , Pulling the tires off the wheels it was easy to see that the plastic molding gates were not sanded down. They were cut pretty close but it still made the car hop.

Once these were turned down I replaced the tires on them, The tires on the trued wheels seam to run true, I did take some rubber off but no much.

Next I put it back together and run some laps.

After putting the Pioneer Camaro back together it ran with no problems, still a little hop in the turns. All parts were oiled with SCC oil. Wheels super glued to axle.
As you can see it pick up a lot of speed,

Now for the Scalextric Camaro tire turning

If I'm understanding this correctly, Austin's Pioneer was 2/10's of a second quicker per lap than the Scalextric Camaro right out of the box. That's a 5% advantage. Simple tuning improved the Pioneer car 10% over it's base time. The Scalextric car could catch up after it gets tuned, but so far the Pioneer Camaro is very impressive.

Looks like there will be a Pioneer Camaro on my shopping list along with a Scalextric Cougar and Sam Posey 'Cuda when the new releases are out. Nothing like having manufacturers compete for bragging rights on the track, no matter what the scale.
