In 1981, a friend and I sailed a Hunter 36 footer on Pickwick Lake during a big snow. I had never sailed in cold weather, much less snow and ice. The owner wanted us to sail the new boat for him (he had never had a big cruiser, but he was experienced at sailing smaller boats). It was amazing. I have seldom been so cold and wet, and seldom had a better evening... oh yeah, did I mention it was dark by the time we came back to the dock?
I heard from Dallas today, and they are nearly shut down by a huge dumping of ice and sleet. Trees that have withstood numerous tornadoes are falling like dominoes. The neighborhood my friend lives in is called Deep Elm (pronouced "elum" for some reason), and is an old area with lots of big trees, so they lost power very soon after the ice started forming.
