Racing at SCC Saturday night

There was a very nice turn out at Slot Car Corner this past weekend, we ran 4 classes.


#1 - Sportscars - Open to modern style (1990's and newer) full bodied Sportscars. Run at 10 volts. Breakout time of 7.5 seconds. No restrictions to modifications.

#2 - Open Wheel - Open to single seater open wheeled cars (ie-IRL, F1, Indy). Run at 8 volts (may be adjusted). Breakout time of 7.5. No restrictions to modifications.

#3 - Group C/Classic Lemans - Open to prototype cars of the 60's and 70's. Also includes cars that were run in the Can-Am series back then. Run at 10 volts. Breakout time of 7.2 seconds. No restrictions to modifications.

#4 - LMP - Open to modern style (1990's and newer) LMP and Prototype cars, including Daytona Prototypes. Run at 10 volts. 7.0 breakout time established . No restrictions established yet.

And here are the results of the race...

An excellent group for the last race at SCC for 2013, with 9 racers in attendance.

Up first was Class #1-Sportscars-run at 10v with a 7.5 breakout. A really good variety of cars were brought out to run, and lots of side-by-side racing (until the inevitable nerf smiley: laugh)

I should mention that 3 drivers now share the record for most laps in the Sportscar class. Claudio, Jonathan and Bob have each accomplished 90 laps. Way to go guys!!

Up next was Class #2, the new Open Wheel class run at 8v. This was the 1st time we ran the breakout of 7.5, and as far as I remember, no one broke out. But Josh was close a few times. While most cars were the modern style Scalextric F1 type cars, there were a few "oddballs". One being a late 60's Lotus, one being a early 90's F1 (a Williams, I believe) and the other the SCX Sigma. At the end, the Lotus came out on top, but not by much over the Williams.

Next was Class #3, the combination LeMans Classics/Group C cars of the 60's and 70's (and if you can remember the 60's, you weren't there). These were run at 10v, and with a quicker 7.2 breakout. There were lots (and lots!!) of breakouts in this class, especially for yours truly. In the end, a couple of GT40's came out on top, followed by whatever Austin was running...

The last class, Class #4, was the LMP class. Run at 10v, after the practice session, it was decided to run this class with a 7.0 breakout, making it our fastest class for the evening. And yes, there were some breakouts, even by those who don't normally breakout in the slower classes smiley: laugh. In the end, it was about as close as you'll get for a result. Oh, and BTW...there was a heat or 2 where Dana beat Phil... smiley: wink

You might have noticed, even with the slower 7.2 breakout, the #3 class did more laps than the #4 class. I suspect that'll change as guys get their LMP cars tuned in better to the 7.0 breakout.

Top performer for the night goes to Jonathan, getting 2 wins and a 3rd for 3 podiums on the evening. Way to go Jonathan!!! smiley: happy

In case some are wondering why we use the breakout rule for all our classes, it's for a couple reasons.

1-once everyone gets their cars dialed in to the breakout, the racing becomes very close. It slows down the faster guys, allowing others to be more competitive.
2-there's no need to have any teching of the cars after the race. Do whatever mods you want to your car to get near the breakout time. If you're too fast, the computer will DQ that lap, but you get to keep racing.

We use Trackmate, and we have it setup so when someone breaks out, it gives off a gunshot sound, so the offender knows right off he was too fast. Then the laughter from the other racers and spectators starts up (Yes, they laugh at me a lot!! :lol: :lol: ).
As you can see from the results above, in 3 of the 4 races, 1st and 2nd were on the same lap, and 3rd wasn't far behind.
The idea is not necessarily to be the fastest, but to be the most consistent. Sometimes it's better to have a slower car and not worry about breaking out, than to have a car that runs close to the breakout and have to be careful. One things for sure, we've been having lots of side-by-side racing! :banana-dance:

I recall the guys around Derby City were using breakout style racing for awhile, and this is where I got the idea to try it. So far, our group is liking it a lot.
