Last project for the year... Finished in time

Postby Ember » Tue Dec 31, 2013 9:18 pm

This is a commission piece which I only managed to get finished last night. I need to get it into the post by Friday so that it has a hope of getting to Switzerland in time to be taken to France for an event. It will be used to display one or two classic Le Mans cars. The diorama is based on a photo of the old town.

Image

Base work is one with a thin layer of DAS air dry modelling clay over a substrate of polystyrene. Fence inserts are soldered brass and the gate is photo etched brass. Manhole cover and drain grate are 1/35 scale laser cut card.

I had to include an empty wine bottle somewhere.

I hope the weather will clear tomorrow so I can get a few photos before I box it up and ship it off.

Probably around 30-35 hours in this one. However, that includes making the brasswork between the stone pillars 3 times because I stuffed up some calculations. (blush) Quite a bit of experimenting on it to work out how to do things as it's a proto-type. To do another like it I might be in for 20 hours or less.

Great work! When I looked at the first image I thought, OK, where's the slot car? It really looks like an outside shot of a driveway.

I know how much time it takes to do scenery like that, lots. I used to do the same building dioramas for armored models years ago, but mine weren't quite as neat as yours as they contained battle damaged areas. Great work Ember. :)

Looks lovely.

It's so good, you want it to be a real place - perhaps with a little lizard sunning itself on the wall.

Thanks guys. This one had me a little nervous being modeled on a real place. It's also my first commission piece and had quite a tight deadline. I'll be very relieved when it is safely in its new home.
