I would stick with the 908's, lola's and 512's.
Nothing wrong with the 917's but nsr 917's are far superior id you have your heart set on a 917.
Make sure to get old stock or used versions with the sidewinder pod.
A sidewinder fly classic is a must have for anyone who runs 1/32 slot cars.

Nobody ever seems to talk about them, but they are some of Fly's all-time greatest, are the 917/10 Can Am/Interserie cars. There are many to choose from, and usually don't fetch outrageous prices (although the Jackie Oliver Gulf car does, sometimes). They normally don't need much more than tire truing, but I believe that your guys are no strangers to tuning. With good tuning, these cars are fantastic. You might want to extend the guide a bit, and if your track is bumpy at all, the shovel nose may scrape a little. It's been a while, but I think the chassis is a bit of a clamshell affair, so be aware of that -- some folks don't like dealing with that setup.

Seems to me very few older Fly's demand big bucks to own now a days. I prefer the Porsche GT1's. Slap on some Supertires and let'em rip.

Yeah, the Fly 917/10s are great cars too. I was always hoping Fly would produce more Can Am cars for us - Maybe SRC will (hint, hint Rafael). In any case, I'm glad to see Carrera has picked up on the Can Am series. Maybe some day we'll get a Carrera Shadow... I can only hope :bow-blue: The Fly March 761s are also great runners right out of the box. I haven't run my Williams FW07 yet - can anyone comment on that car?

The odd gearing configuration is not very impressive. I did not care for it much compared to the simple inline systems the March and Lotus use.

They did this to keep the body work on the car more scale appealing, but in operation it isn't impressive. (to me)

I have 2 Lotus's and 1 March tuned for our 3 laner. PG tires and a motor swap. Just fun models to drive and give you close action. Watching them snake through the turns is one of those sights you really enjoy and make you happy you are in this hobby.

I also have the Williams, but my standards are lower than Harry's. I like running it, but there is a lot of gear noise. Years with Ninco have made me immune to gear ruckus, apparently. It's a complex system of gears, and does what it's supposed to do, which is allow them to use the proper bodywork. It doesn't make a better slot car, though, it just adds drag and noise. They are still reasonably quick, but their March 761 is a much better runner as far as vintage GP goes.

If you do want a 917 LH, but don't want the current inline/vacu-formed interior version, keep your eye to ebay for the old ones. Be warned though that they generally go for around $100. If you want a long tail Porsche without dropping that much money, consider one of the SRC 907 L's or the new 908 L's. They don't have the motor pods, but SRC is basically Fly with a metal windshield wiper.

Regardless of what model you choose, be sure to check out Cincyslot's inventory. Look in the Fly section as well as the various collections that they have for sale. Between them and those that randomly pop up cheap on ebay, you can find pretty much all that you're in the mood for.

At various times, Fly produced cars that were considered to be the hot setup for racing. The Joest Porsche enjoyed its day in the sun, and for a while, it was very tough to get one inexpensively. But hey, pick up the Fly Poly version for 20 bucks, and you have a good car ready to paint, or you can keep it in its pseudo-Burger-King livery.

:twocents-mytwocents: Just to back up what's been said; Chevron is probably the best Fly Classic "starter car". My Fly favorites are Marcos and the "non-R" C5 Vettes in the front motor catagory and Chevron and the "vanilla" 908 in the rear motors. I look at Fly cars as a challenge to tune rather than a problem.
