Brass Pinions on stock Scaley Motors

I am in the process of getting parts together to build two pre 1965 Sports or Sports Racing cars. The rules state that you can only use a motor with 18,000 RPM or less. My plan is to purchase a couple of the Slot It sidewinder chassis and fit them to the correct bodies. Now, my question, like many of you I have several stock Scaley 18K motors that I have replaced with faster motors and these seem to be a direct pop in for my chassis of choice. When you are using one of these motors and wish to put a brass or steel pinion on it do you have to remove or lessen the splines on the motor shaft that kept the plastic pinion on it?

If you have a good gear press you can use brass pinions on a splined motor shaft with no problem. Shoreline Model Raceways has a class for cars with a Scalextric motor and the Slot.t HRS is the most popular chassis. You will need an endbell drive motor pod.

To minimize any chance of distortion of the pinion, I use some fine grit sandpaper on the motor shaft. I use a 9 volt battery and just a few seconds of holding the paper on the shaft while it spins. I don't sand it flush, just a little to reduce the splines. But as Rich stated you don't have to really, just a one of goofy things I do.

I also lightly sand it, must be a Harry thing! Afraid of pushing the shaft in the motor.

Or you can be completely OCD like me and solder those brass pinions on. I use a 2mm reamer on the pinion so it will slide onto the motor shaft. Then tin the shaft with solder, put a very small drop of acid flux in the bore of the pinion, place on the end of the motor shaft, heat the pinion with a soldering iron and slide the heated pinion onto the motor shaft exactly where you want it. Just something I do. :twocents-twocents:

I have put brass pinions (Slot.It) on many Scalextric back stripe motors after removing the stock plastic gear. I use the Slot.It gear press/extractor and have never had any problems with the splined shaft on the Scaley motor.
