Canadian Grand Prix,, fit for an Aussie

Postby chappy » Sun Jun 08, 2014 4:51 pm

I watched the Canadian F1 race today, and I must admit it was likely the best F1 race I have seen in years.
it really did come down to, the wire, with 5 cars in contention.
Close racing, lots of action, and ive never heard the commentators so excited in years.
Congrats to Aussie up and coming , soon to be a great Daniel Ricciardo.
He drove a fantastic race passing the Mercedes of Rosberg with 3 laps to go.
If this is an inkling of what the F1 season is going to be like, it will be the best in years

The Hamilton / Rosberg fued is ridiculous. Mercedes needs to put those two guys in their places and tell them to drop the egos.

I'm glad that down-to-earth kid won the race and not one of those fellas. Yeah, GP/F1 has always been full of glitz and glamor, but the snootiness that those two Merc drivers bring has to go.

That was one heck of a last lap.

Not seen it yet. The 3:30 am alarm was a bit much for me. Hoping to catch the replay. So excited for Daniel, particularly after the after race disqualification in Australia.

Top job Dan. Such a likeable guy. Seems even Seb was happy with Daniel's win. Could Seb be growing up? Or is it just the Ricciardo charm?

Hammy is behaving like a spoilt brat. He tends to do it when he's not winning. Look at his last two team tenures.

It was one of the best F1 races I've seen also ! Too bad for Massa and that late accident with Perez.
Anxious to see the next GP in Austria !

Yep, a fantastic race for certain. I don't remember a race of any kind when on the last lap there were five cars, all fighting for position, hoping their tires would last, and the leader of the race (who came in 2nd at the end), was driving a car that was in serious trouble mechanically. Come to think of it, I don't think I ever saw a whole team eliminated by crashing into each other during the first lap, nor a 170mph double crash with the 4th and 5th place cars on the last lap. Its going to be re-run so check your listings to see it this coming week.

I know its easy to point at the best cars and drivers and talk trash about them, and everybody does it. The truth is, between Hamilton, Rosberg and Vettel, there's nobody on the planet who could accurately pick the best driver. The Mercedes chassis is superior in every way to everyone else's this year, and Hamilton and Rosberg are competing on a level the others barely understand. Vettel saw it for a while with his former teammate, but nothing like what Hamilton and Rosberg are doing. When your car is miles ahead of the competition, and your teammate is one of the five best drivers in the world, you don't stop competing 24 hours a day. They aren't spoiled brats like the current crop of NASCAR divas, they are a world away from all that silly shenanigans off track.

The most important factor was the Sporting Rules nonsense that required these, all-just-alike, V-6, hybridized, computerized, one tank of fuel for the whole race, incredibly delicate cars. Imagine- the most advanced race cars in the world (that's what F-1 is supposed to be by definition), having cars crippled because on a hot day, they had to use the brakes so much that two of the three systems that drive the car were compromised on four different teams. All so the French ruling body could say they did trendy things to the rules. Twits. And no one with the power to do it will vote them out.

F1 cars are SUPPOSED to be delicate and temperamental. They are SUPPOSED to be the thoroughbreds of the motor racing industry to attract the best drivers (and those with enough money to buy a decent seat).

A racing thoroughbred is a flighty animal full of nervous energy, that is where their speed comes from. Why is it so wrong that a thoroughbred racing car should be the same? They are supposed to be working on the outer limits of technology and engineering. Otherwise they might as well be driving pedal cars.

All true, Lynne, but there's no development, no competition between the world's richest and most able car companies to try new things, to excell in ways no one else has the capabilities to do- that's what the FIA has done to us. The stupid dilettante FIA makes silly rules and we all lose the spirit of F-1. The Ferrari Boxer engines, the array of V-12s, V-10s, V-8s all kinds of amazing engineering, to seek speed, not doing the best one can to be fast within rigid rules. Tires by one and only one manufacturer, with designs that are standardized across the field... The list goes on and on. I know its gone forever, but I just can't stand that people don't know what it was.

That said, these drivers are amazing. So many controls, so many sensors and adjustments... not to mention radio instructions from the pits, how do they do it?

Proof that there doesn't need to be a ton of passing for edge-of-your-seat excitement. What a phenomenal race this was! :banana-dance:

This is a great race to catch in replay, if you missed it. Ricciardo earned this win in spades -- he's a fantastic finisher. Happy to see him get one after having that podium taken away earlier in the season.

This circuit almost always gives us great racing. And they just signed up for 10 more years. Yeah!

Now I'm miffed. One HD repeat of the GP Broadcast is 23:30 Tuesday night. Not a whole lot better than the original time of 3:30 Monday morning.
