A bit confused!

Postby BigP20 » Wed Sep 24, 2014 2:44 pm

I'm having trouble with one of my cars chattering. I've taken it apart rebuilt it twice and it still happens. I thought it might be the track so I cleaned it last night. Nope not the problem. So my question is how do I stop it?

First instinct would be tyres and/or wheels out of round...

A reality raceway 1/24 modified. I changed axle and wheels. Motor is soldered in with screw on bottom.

I just went to the Reality Raceway website. Looked up their Modifieds and saw they are using what looks like FCR chassis to build their cars.

Now, how long have you had this car?

If it's not a long time, you might have broken one of the "Adjust-a-Bushings" from it's solder joint. That will cause this type of chassis to chatter.

It it's a long time, you might have worn either or both bushings and they simply need to be replaced.

Let us know what you find.

Checked all the obvious things like broken solder joints around the motor and rear axle? Remove axle assembly and place into a drill press. Turn on drill press and look to see how out of round the rotation is. Now swap over the axle ends and repeat. If you have more than a poofteenth of wobble replace axle/rims. I test all my axles rims from new. Youd be surprised how many are bent right out of the packet.

While everybody has given you some very very good tips, I want to know if you get the chatter on the exit of the corner when the power is being applied. I asked because I have cars that will do this and it is because of the body screws are to tight and not allowing the body to float on the chassis, or because the tires I am using have a ton of traction and I got the power turned up and my finger is being to aggressive coming out the corners. My Sprints Plus with Pro-Track silicone tires will do this for two feet or more coming out of a corner if I don't apply the power more smoother. Just try all the suggestions you will find the problem.......

I'm getting th chatter from the middle of the corner out. The tires are pro track rubber. Power is 11.7 commercial track off a battery. I trimmed the tires down which seemed to help a little bit. It's not as bad. The body is laminated paper attached with body clips, so I don't think the body can cause it.

Chatter is often caused by chassis flex, usually in the area between the motor and the rear axle carriers. Gluing the motor to the chassis often helps to eliminate this problem but the chassis may need to be reinforced or a brace can be added between the motor and uprights. With 1/24th Flexicars I add a wire brace across the rear axle carriers. Having some body float can also help to damp out some chatter.

A pic would help. Does it chatter in a straight line when you apply power? Are the tyres glued on to the rims? What set up are you running at the front? Remove the wheels. Does it still chatter? If no then that is your problem. Coat tyres in superglue to make them "zero grip".
