1/32 Money Pit

Postby btaylor » Fri Oct 10, 2014 7:23 am

Had to laugh at myself this morning, I was going through my newest order of parts that came in yesterday from several different sources. I had acquired a resin body not long ago in a trade that i really liked,and because it was just kind of a throw in,i really didnt have anything invested in it. This is where to me,the story gets funny. Since all i had was a body,i needed everything else, no big deal,most of our projects start this way. So last week i sat down an ordered what i needed to build this car heres, my list.
Body= FREE! got to build it !
Chassis=15.95 (did not want brass on this one)
Motor= 8.99
wheels= (special project,special wheels)32.00
axles=3.99
crown gear=6.99
Guide=1.50
really wanted a special addition to this one. light kit with brakes! 24.99
Tires= 8.00
Now at this point,with shipping, i have just over a hundred dollars in a free bodied car!
The part that made me laugh at myself is this, I have been looking long and hard at a particular Ninco classic that i want really bad,but will not pay the $89.00 asking price,as i think it is to high!
Next allowance,that Ninco is coming home!

Bob, You did read the posting that Ninco is soon to change their business model to allow them to sell their cars more in line with the other car makers pricing didn't you? I'd wait on that classic just a little bit until the new prices are in.

So true gentlemen!, I have quite a few that are somewhat costly to build as well, but what got me was my inability to pay for a nicely detailed car,that was so much less than what i spent on one old one! :lol: Of course leaving out the light kit with brake lights would have evened the score, but they were one of those "must haves".

And Mike,i dont know if Ninco will be bringing the one i want back anytime soon, maybe so? i can wait and see.I did see the new pricing though! love it. The one i want is the Maroon Jag with same colored wheels.

I read this and the entire time I was just smiling...then I wept, and back to smiling.

Yes, we sure can spend the coin and these little cars.

Mr. Thomas and I had a talk yesterday and we know how crazy it is, but we want what we want. That is why we get so excited when this small box arrives and inside is our slot car bling...shiny wheels, axles, gears, tires, screws, braid, wire, guides. Like little kids aren't we?

Last night The General asked how we were on "chassis" stock. Meaning do we have enough brass to build some cars? In other words we are going to the big city to buy even more shiny stuff tomorrow :dance:

And Bob? When I publish this next article please enjoy it. Still deep into it and reading this just made my day. When you see it, I expect you will nod your head :)

Cant wait to read it Harry! I hope no one thought i was complaining,as i was not! :D , well maybe at my ability to rationalize things. I am as addicted to slots as anyone could be, and the joy it brings me building (or buying) these cars is priceless.
The Christmas day feeling that Harry mentioned when you get your parts box in the mail is Great also,and i think if it makes us happy, price does not matter. I want to also say,and i should have said this in the original post, That i think for the most part, The manufacturers are pricing their cars very fair, With the possible exception of Carrera,who gives you WAY more for your money in detail and reliability than they cost. And i am certain that the cottage industry folks are making very little in the profit areas, given the production costs of anything these days. And with that said,when is the last time anyone got the kind of quick service and support that we all get from the slot parts people? I have even received e-mails from a few asking if the part i ordered were really what i wanted,as it didnt match the rest of my parts list! Fixing an otherwise screwed up order! Yup we got it good,

Nothing better than getting that little box in the mail with all that Bling in it. Think that's why I prefer to scratch build. :D

Slot racing is still waaay less expensive than 1:1 racing we do in the warm months, our wives love the less $$ we spend on slot cars parts etc.
But,, new NSR car 120.00
Carrera digital chip 25.00
Super silicone tires 8.50
bump up the motor 20.00
N107 traction mags 12.00
Used fleebay plastic cool old body 15-25.00
Shipping cost
X the 12+ cars that I own....Hmmm, it does add up.

Now Bob, now you went and done it. :angry-tappingfoot: This is all your fault. :naughty: You posted that link, I opened it, and just had to have a set for myself so I ordered one set :violin: . They will look good on the fiberglass Maserati Birdcage body that has been languishing in my drawer for the last year and a half. That is a great price with tires and all! I think I'll try to fit the body and wheels to a Sprints plus or narrowed womp chassis. Now how much will the total come to?

Those Racer wires are really good. Got the on my XK120. Just looks too good and the rubber on the continues to improve with use.

Think I paid AUD 28 for mine 4 years ago. But given most alloys are AUS 14 a pair plus inserts plus tyres I didn't think the price too bad.

Oh.... Did someone say they were after the Donnington Jag?

It may be a money pit, but it will be YOUR money pit that you built up with your own hands. Priceless!
