The 2E looks nice; both topsides and underneath. The SW Piranha in the brass chassis looks potent!

Speaking of Transports , USPS advise that an Ohio bound Alfa left port Chicago yesterday morning at 10:30 headed for the Can Am events.
Should be a good test for the olifer shapeways chassis.

Technically, neither the Chaparral 2 or the 2C were ever raced in the CanAm series.

The car in Keith's photo ran in the early rounds of the 1965 USRRC championship, and was always just a Chaparral 2, later dubbed "2A" by the press when the actual 2C was built. The 2C was a very different car:



You can see there are no intakes ahead of the rear wheels, and a different tail/wing design. It was all-aluminum instead of having the glass fiber pod that the 2 had.

Both cars were used in 1965, but for the 1966 CanAm, the 2E was ready and was run exclusively by Jim Hall and Phil Hill. As I recall, the 2C was rebuilt into one of the 2Es and some of the regular 2s ended up as 2Ds.

All that said, they certainly were part of the CanAm legacy, in spirit if not in fact.

Like most of my builds, this is a collaboration car and I would not have been able to do any work on it at all if it had not been for the help that I received from two forum members, Dennis Samson (gascarnut) who not only provided the rear axle/motor mount, but also walked me through all of the materials that I would need to build a brass chassis car and how to use them, and Chris Walker (chrisguyw) who gave me step-by-step assembly instructions and answered numerous question for me over the past week and a half. Thanks guys!

Total weight on the running chassis is 67g. With the body on, it should come in at around 85g before adding any weight.

In the meantime, the body is getting its mounting post pads epoxied in overnight:



Not a whole lot more to do on this one except the tuning..........lots of tuning.............. ;)

Dennis, you are right, but I have always considered the two series to be one and the same, since really only the name was changed and the cars were pretty much the same. When I was growing up in the 60s, we considered them to be the same, and never differentiated between the two. You are also right about some degree of confusion about whether the car I sent is a 2 or 2C. When I google it, I see both cars described in both ways, some with the big rear spoiler and some with the small one. At least it is a Chaparral, for sure, and Chaparral to me means CanAm.

Either way, it's been sent, and I'm sure it fits the spirit of the proxy.

Dennis, your questions got me researching. Using the info on Racing Sports Cars. com I discovered that the Chapparal I have sent is a replica of the 2A, chassis 001, that was campaigned by Hap Sharp in the USRRC in 1965. He and Jim Hall had a few 1,2 finishes in that year. One of these cars was rebuilt as a 2E for the CanAm in 1966, and the other closed in for endurance racing as the 2D.

Although the USRRC continued for a few more years in parallel to the CanAm, its competitors were mainly those who were not up to the speed of the CanAm, and the faster cars and drivers moved over. Both the USRRC and CanAm were sanctioned by the SCCA. Most of their races were held on the same tracks, like Riverside, Mid-Ohio, Bridgehampton and Road America.

I love being able to do research on the internet. Who knows what you will learn, eh?
