I'm almost ready to start my car - the brass order from Chicagoland Hobbies arrived today.

But, I can't wait much longer to start on the body because it's getting cold here in Maine and I don't have a heated and ventilated place to paint, so the barn will have to do. My car is going to be three-tone, red white, and blue, with a white hood like yours. How did you do the painting - start with an overall coat of white, then mask off the areas to stay white and go over the rest with red? I'm still undecided about an overall white base coat first, or just mask off what doesn't get each color and do it in 3 partial coats. For an overall base coat, how long does it need to dry before putting masking tape on it?

The base color is light blue which is the color of the plastic on a Monogram Mario Andretti Ford Fairlane that spent a day soaking in brake fluid over a year ago. The body seemed brittle after that which is why I never did anything with it, but seems okay now.

I used the Americana brand multi-surface acrylic craft paint thinned with Windex to around 60/40 paint to thinner, and shot it through the $10 Harbor Freight airbrush. The cream color over everything first, then let it dry overnight before masking and spraying the red. I don't know if the overnight dry was really necessary, but it seemed prudent before sticking down the edge of the blue tape real good to get a crisp line. Worked okay. I like an overall white base coat because even though these paints are opaque, they just seem to pop a little better over white. It's usually good practice to paint darker colors over lighter as you go.

I've run into a little interference problem between the motor can and the underside of the interior insert. I'm looking at what I can sand to snuggle the insert up a little higher into the body, but there's not much to be gained there. I'm also going to sand the bottom of the insert and hopefully stop just before I break through. Gonna be tight.

I got a few decals on 'er last night.

The water based acrylic paint is what I used on my Possum Hollow entries I just sent in - it is the first time I have tried using the water based with a harbor freight air brush - but I was happy with the results. :)
I didn't try taping off for a second color for fear of damaging the base - but based on how yours looks - I am going to have to give that a try next! :D

Adding the guide and motor wiring will just about do it.
